Sledding Accident Kills Staten Island Jets Fan

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A Jets victory celebration turned deadly for one fan on Staten Island.

Ray Larsen was struck and killed by an SUV while celebrating Gang Green’s win over the Patriots Sunday night. Police told 1010 WINS’ John Montone that the victim had been drinking during the game, but it is unknown how many drinks he had or if he was intoxicated.

According to investigators, the 46-year-old sat on a green sled and careened down his steep, unplowed driveway in Great Kills, veering right into the path of the vehicle as it drove down his street.

The driver, a 61-year-old woman, will not face charges.

All due respect to dude and his family: Coupla things though; ya notice how they report that the poor driver hadn’t “been drinking’, but the fact that this Larsen was drinking is de-emphasized; is that because of the neighborhood in which this guy lived ? Secondly, it sounds like folks really had to scrounge for something substantive to say about this guy. That’s usually the case when they have to trot out the old standbys “fun loving … always smiling, was going to start cosmetology school soon, etc. You know. Like I said, condolences, but: When is this country going to stop denying its monstrous alcohol drinking problem ?

  • Kim

It is alarming reading some of the reply’s here. Are you little kids, cold hearted, or maybe no one taught you right from wrong? scary and sad!

So sorry for this family, I pray you find peace.

  • Cynthia

I am shocked and saddend by hearing this news – it took my breath away. I’ve known Ray for years – we worked together at SunGard. He Loved life, his friends, and the Jets! He was a great friend eventhough we did not speak much since I left there. Ray was a great friend, and a prankster! His anticks, and humor will be greatly missed! RIP Buddy – I will miss you.

  • The Good Samaritan

This is a very sad tragedy in which alcohol impaired the victims mind. It does not matter if this guy was a Giants fan,a Patriots fan,a Knicks fan etc. Mr. Larsen very foolishly sled down his own driveway onto the street.

You have to use common sense if you are going to sled ride down your driveway. At least have someone in the street looking out for cars coming down the street.

Some news reports stated that he was drinking at a restaurant during the Jets game. I would not be surprised if the victims family sues the restuarat saying it was their fault they served him.

    The Good Samaritan has spoken.

    • Bruno

Good Smaritan, it would be a DISGRACE if the family sued the restaurant that served him. With that kind of thinking, the driver should sue the family for allowing an intoxicated person out of the house to traumatize her forever as a result of this tragedy. Good grief people, enough with lawsuit ideas. Society needs to take responsibility for their own actions and not blame everyone else for their own stupidity. Are you an ambulance chasing lawyer by any chance? Now THAT wouldn’t surprise me.

  • Al

Ray was a true friend. If you knew him, you would only have nice things to say about him. By writing insensitive comments here just lets the world know that you are truly a lowlife.

Ray was a HUGE Jets fan for many years. I could just imagine how excited he was over their victory. What a tragedy such misfortune happened to such a great guy during his celebration. Anyone that knew Ray will be sure to miss him. May much comfort be with all his family and friends at this time of grief.

    Life brings tears,
    smiles and memories.
    The tears dry,
    the smile fades,
but the memories live on forever.

Ray you will be missed, but never forgotten. May you rest in peace my brother.

  • mrw

I feel worse for the poor driver who will have this on her conscience for the rest of her life even though it was no fault of her own.

  • Johnny Blaster

Rest in piece , may u watch over your family and your beloved Jets…

  • christine

and at what age does it say in the books to stop acting like a kid??
things happen. my heart goes out to his family.

    • KPMc

Do you really needed it printed in some mystical book? Because around the time you have a home and kids and a family of your own is a good time to start acting like a responsible adult.

My heart goes out to his family and the driver too but don’t miss an opportunity to learn and teach a lesson because it’s not the right time. Then his death will really be in vain.

  • serg

Leaving with GOD in your heart is not limited in to reading a box of books written by people trying to find the reason of “why”, or no modern or indian medicine trying to explain” why”, ” again”, my wife was rose up from death in the year 2009 while the doctors were trying to find “why” this was happening. Trying to find out the reason of” why” take to long and to me is a waste of time. GOD IS NOW. If they want to call him imaginary friend. I love my imaginary friend. The honor and the glory belongs to JESUS. and with him is where Rey is right now.

    • Have A Heart

      Amen :)

    • Against the lord

Listen Serg, stop it with the GOD BS you weak sheep, we are on our own here and if God could really protect you why couldnt he stop something as simple as me saying you are a weak sheep? Yoo Hoo, GOD, you suck and your son Jesus is also a joke………………………. I was waiting because if there was something like God that made everything certainly he could take care of someone like me talking trash to him……………im still waiting but God hasnt shown up. F U God, what are you gonna do about it? Nothing because there is no F’in God and this guy made a stupid mistake that cost him his life.

      • KPMc

Patience… you’ll get yours in due time. Don’t be in such a hurry cause you’re not going to like the result.

      • serg

you are right when you say we are on our own. We make our own decisions . I hope you make the right ones. I already made my own. The truth will open your eyes. Jesus is the truth, the life and the way. You should try to believe some time, a see lock of goodness in your heart. God = love

      • Tony

If we are on our own then why do people bother praying if there is free will and God cant do anything anyway!!!! Why is it that God only shows up after tragedies happen and people say at least we have god. thats BS. I would imagine that if he could really help people in need he would help them BEFORE a tragedy occurred not after because hes too late at that point. I defy you GOD and dare you to do something…………..still waiting…………………….still waiting……………………….still waiting…. I gotta go, GOD isnt showing up cause hes fake. Oh yea the Earth is only 6,000 years old too and people lived on earth the same time as dinosaurs like T-Rex that were 60 feet tall and could run 50 miles an hour, sounds crazy? Well that is what religious freaks would have you believe.

      • Muhammad

May God guide you to the right path.

  • edy

With all due respect and sympathy for the family, but this grown adult did something very stupid. You’d think a kid is capable of doing this, but an adult…I don’t know.

  • SunEmp

Ray was a beloved coworker and am proud to have met and worked with him. I will remember Ray most for his practical jokes and zest for life – he was/is legendary! My prayers go out to Ray and his family and to the driver. No one, I mean no one has the right to be judgmental and cynical when a tradedy of this magnitude takes place. Put yourselves in the shoes of his family and friends – no one deserves the cruel words your garbage-filled, pie holes spew.

    • Connie

I am so sorry for the lost of your friend. I dont belive anyone has the right to judge anyone. Let’s face it the Jets winnning yesterday has been a long over due wait for many Jet fans. I could see the excitement and actions of Mr. Larsen. May you all find a way to carry on.

  • Alleycatt

May Mr. Larsen rest in peace. My prayers to his family, friends and the driver of the vehicle involved. To the morons that are criticizing this man, have some compassion. We all have done something we regret, hopefully with lesser consequences but it could have been someone close to you. Imagine that being your son, brother, friend or co-worker. Stop with the negative comments !!!

    • Lady Silverwolf

I agree with you Alleycatt, My sympathy to the family and to the driver who has to be going thru shere hell at this time.

  • Mike

He might have been a nice guy, but what about the 61 year old lady. Not only does she have to live with his mistake but I bet his wife has already contacted a lawyer to sue this woman and it wasn’t even her fault.

    • Nick

You are obviously not feeling the aura of stupidity here.

You should only feel sorry for the stupid. All others are suppose to pay for stupids’ mistakes.

      • serg

we all make mistakes, Haven’t you yet. like writing a unfit comment. Let’s stop judging how big or how small the mistake was. Perfection is something to achieve on our own. DO not let time to go by. Life is short. We all have the proof in front of our eyes, With all the respect to Ray’s family. How can we demand respect from others if we don’t start respecting other’s pain. My Love and understanding goes to the driver too. We all show how mature we are with the limitation of our own comments also.

  • Have A Heart

Are all you rude people dumb? We ALL do things sometimes without thinking twice about it. Remember this man has a family and friends just like you all do and I’m sure if they had their choice this story wouldn’t have even been published… All you people calling him an idiot need to grow up and have some heart. Someone lost their life and its so typical for jerks like you guys to have something negative to say. I’ll be praying for you all.

    • Jeff

IMO news reports should leave the comments section off pages that deal with the death of someone. Misery loves company

      • Have A Heart

Wow Nick… idk how old you are but you really need to grow up. I believe you’re just on here to bash people and that isn’t right. Isn’t it time to take your meds at the mental institute you’re in? I didn’t think they let you guys on computers :/

My condolences to Mr. Larsen’s family, I deeply apologize that you guys have to read ignorant comments that some of these people are leaving.

    • pogo the clown

      Very well said.

    • jw

Praying to what? There’s nothing up there, just like this guy had nothing up there too.

      • serg

How can you call God to someone or something that is been created. I did’t know Rey, never met him, but like him, I’m a jet fan, I hope we all learn from this type of mistakes. Because we are created we are limited and vulnerable to make mistakes. GOD bless you Ray and rest in peace brother. LOVE YOU, FAMILY AND FRIENDS… AND YOU NICK.

      • Nick

Clinical definition of a schizophrenic imbecile with low IQ:

        A fixed false believe and
        An Imaginary Friend

With the help of modern medicine, we know what you are now. And you can be helped.

      • Have A Heart

I won’t say anything negative to you because that’s proabably exactly what you want. You must not feel bad about anything bad that you do or say, or even have a beautiful family that you love. What a shame. To answer your question I would be PRAYING TO GOD!! The great and almighty savior. Ever heard of the Bible? You might want to pick it up, read it and learn just a tiny bit of compassion and humanity. Wouldn’t you just love for people to mock and make fun of one of your family members that died in a tragic accident? I didn’t think so. Take your ignorant remarks somewhere else.

      • Nick

So what created “god”, twit… er … serg.

      • serg

there is someone watching over the one who believe in him. If Ray made a mistake i’m sure he is in JESUS’s presence.

      • serg

if there was nothing up there, you wouldn’t be down here. God bless you.

      • Native Noo Yawker

        beautifully said JW.

  • DanTe

Now who is going to pay for the damage to the poor woman’s car?

Here’s hoping this idiot died before it spawned and further contaminated the gene pool.

    • Meredith

I am his cousin and all I can say is you’re a cold insensitive heartless person. Ray was amazing and had two wonderful children. My heart goes out to this woman and her family but right now ours loss an incredible man how on earth can you say something so cold and mean I know Rays mother was proud of him every day of his life too bad your mother certainly can’t say the same. You should feel very very ashamed of what you just wrote put yourself in my shoes and see what a comment like that would do to you.

  • Winey

I worked with Ray for almost 15-yrs. He was a an upbeat, fun loving, practical joker who had an insatiable appetite for life and for work. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to the poor woman involved in this tragic accident. Ray will surely be missed but not forgotten. I love you Ray. Rest In Peace.

  • Native Noo Yawker

i like that, the 61 year old will not face charges. why the HELL should she face charges. because someone is an idiot and sleds into a street out of nowwhere in the dark

  • pogo the clown

    Very sad :(

Prayers to the family of Mr. Larsen as well as the driver of the vehicle which struck him.

  • Laura

Ray was a wonderful man, friend and co-worker. He would do anything for you. He was always the first to ask “how can I help”. Even when things weren’t going so well, he always had a smile on his face. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. Rest in Peace Ray.

  • Gail Knight Boucher

Its such a shame a celebration had to end in tragedy. My prayers go out to his family.

  • TJ

I will almost bet that drinking was a factor! A man at that age in his right mind would have thought twice before pulling off a stunt like that. Alcohol will always get you, one way or another. Ban Booze… …Legalize the bud!

  • JG

All he said was that he died from “idiocy”! I mean the man was 46, C’MON!!!! I’m sure he was a good guy.. most people are.. but ANYone who hears about this (who doesn’t know him) is going to automatically think “a 46-yr old man died doing WHAT??!!”
Still I’m sorry he died.. maybe a compromise would be “died from extreme unluckiness and idiocy”. Cause if the car wasn’t coming down at that EXACT moment, this is just fun and games.

  • mari n

The drivers life is now ruined because of a foolish preventable act.

  • David Flores

so sorry to hear about this accident

  • Joe Plumber

With a name like ‘Great Kills’ it may be time to move because your life depends on it.

  • carlene

Don’t make comments about people if you don’t know them. This man was a wonderful guy and would do anything for you. He was a true friend in every sense of the word. I love this man and he was a great friend and co-worker. We all miss him very much things will never be the same without him in the world. Rest in Peace Ray I will miss you always.

  • cygon

died from idiocy. I must say, does the Jets even care? do you even get a percentage of their wins? I will celebrate them if I get some ‘dividends’ from their wins.
