No Good Pizza? No Problem; Pittsburgh Loves Its Pierogis

PITTSBURGH (CBS 2) -- This rivalry between the Jets and Steelers, New York and Pittsburgh, isn't just about football.

CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez hit the streets of Pittsburgh on Thursday to find out whose game-time grub is better.

You can't find a decent bagel, but they do have pizza in "Steel Town."

But it's no New York pizza.

Pittsburgh, however, does boast the best pierogis. A recent survey shows residents actually eat 11 times more of these polish potato dumplings than in any other city in the country. And locals say nobody makes them better than Dorothy Pyszkowski.

Pyszkowski owns S&D Polish Deli in the Strip District. Her ingredients are shipped in from Poland.

"Pittsburgh used to be a community of a lot of Polish and Slavic people," Pyszkowski said. "There's less gluten in Polish flour so it's a little bit drier, more fluffy and that's the whole secret of the dough."

"They have like the best taste and the onions are just cooked absolutely right," Steelers fan Kerri Gorny said.

After tasting them herself, Sanchez had to agree.

She then took her taste buds to the famous Primanti Bros., which started as a truckers' sandwich shop back in 1933.

"They would eat it on the road. This place was originally opened from midnight to 8 in the morning. Now we're open for 24 hours," employee Norman Teklinski said.

Toni Corrabetti has been stacking these sandwiches for nearly 40 years and wasn't afraid to tout the product as the best sandwich in Pittsburgh.

The Italian bread sandwiches are a meal in itself -- with meat, provolone, and coleslaw topped with fries.

"It's part of Pittsburgh. If you come to Pittsburgh you gotta try Primanti's," Steelers fan Bill Paterson said.
