Census: N.J. Population Shifting Southward
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewsYork/AP) -- Figures from the 2010 Census show population growth in New Jersey is tilting southward as the state's suburbs continue to diversify.
A trove of state-specific data released Thursday shows the largest population growth in Gloucester, Ocean and other southern counties.
Newark remains New Jersey's largest city population-wise, followed by Jersey City and Paterson.
Hispanics account for the largest minority group in New Jersey and they are spreading out across the state and increasingly nearer to smaller, affluent suburbs.
The data provides a detailed look at population counts and characteristics for small areas. Officials are mandated to use it in the redrawing of congressional and state legislative districts.
New Jersey is losing a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives because of the 2010 census count.
