NYPD Getting Ready To Rumble With New Siren

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The New York City Police Department is getting ready to rumble.

The NYPD is planning to outfit all its new cars with a state-of-the-art siren, dubbed “The Rumbler.”

The system uses woofers to emit powerful bass sound along with a screeching siren. The result is a sound pedestrians can feel as well as hear.

There are about 150 police vehicles equipped with the Rumbler on the street. Soon enough, 5,000 police vehicles are expected to be equipped with it.

Like traditional sirens, the Rumbler can produce a variety of different alarms. Unlike previous sirens, a demonstration video shows the bass effect is so strong it can be seen moving a glass of water across a table.

The video also shows the bass-driven siren apparently scaring a dog away – even though a traditional siren didn’t seem to.

What do you think? Will the new siren make a difference or is the NYPD playing catch up? Sound off in our comments section.

How about making/enforcing a law against the noise that the cars are making that keeps them from hearing emergency vehicles. A few expensive tickets would be a great incentive to drivers to keep their music/noise levels at an acceptable level. This would also save a lot of money both in not having to change the police cars, but also people would not need hearing aids at a young age.

    this is a test

  • Buying a stairway...

I’d have to hear them play Zeppelin’s, Stairway to Heaven, over their new sound system before I reach my final decision. :-D

    • KC and the Sunshine Band

If they use those lights up top as a disco ball, they could rent the whole vehicle as a dance sound machine, then make back some money… :-)

It’s DUNM ASS like you RAS that won’t move over and let emergency vehicles pass that make manufactures keep coming up with loader and different warning devices.
Also if it wasn’t for the Police presences, you wouldn’t be able to live there!!!!!!!!

sure.. just what NYC and residents needs & wants.. more obtrusive noise and and a continuous overpowering police presence.

Agreed.. I have enough trouble with my so called neighbors with bass blaring from the cars when they sit on the sidewalk doing nothing for hours upon hours.. and the cops do nothing about it.. fan-freakin-tastic.
