Manganaro's Grosseria Italiana May Soon Be Closing

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A staple Italian grocery and restaurant on the West Side that opened in the 1890s and helped launch the hero sandwich may soon be saying "Ciao."

Manganaro's Grosseria Italiana on Ninth Avenue has been put up for sale for $5.3 million following a long-standing dispute between two brothers, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Manganaro's Hero-Boy, a separate sandwich shop next door, will remain open.

At its height, the Grosseria's lunchtime crowd included garment center workers and performers and staff at the old Metropolitan Opera House on West 39th Street.

It had 200-pound provolone cheeses, sausages and salamis hanging from its ceiling.
