1-Woman Liquor Store Wrecking Crew Explains Herself

Says Clerk's Use Of 'You People' Comment Set Her Off On Tirade

WEST NYACK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — The woman who let loose in a Rockland County liquor store has turned herself in and she’s talking about what provoked her bottle-breaking binge.

CBS 2’s Tony Aiello has the exclusive story.

Her liquor store snit fit was caught on surveillance camera. Mahogany Morrow, 31, stiff-armed a shelf as she stormed out, leaving a trail of broken booze bottles in her wake.

“It was a big mistake. I am apologetic. That’s not me. That’s not my character. That’s not my demeanor,” Morrow said Thursday.

Aiello caught up with Morrow at the Palisades Mall, where she works at “Dave and Busters.”

She admitted her bottle-busting was the wrong reaction to a dispute with the store clerk.

Morrow said the clerk’s use of the phrase “you people” set her off.

“’You people, you kind of people, don’t know why you come in here ‘cuz you cause so much trouble.’” Who is ‘you people?’ And what is my kind of people?” Morrow said.

Store manager Chris Giacopelli said the clerk told a different story, but no matter.

“Either way, no excuse what she did. Whatever she was feeling, still shouldn’t have done what she done. I didn’t like it, could’ve walked out and gone to another liquor store,” Giacopelli said.

It’s another addition to the meltdown hall of shame — along with former flight attendant Stephen Slater and his infamous runway exit and the Ohio mom who got Mc-nasty because the drive-thru worker forgot her McNuggets.

Aiello showed the Mahogany morrow video to Manhattan therapist Ruth Lippin.

“We live in a society where there is tons of stress and one of the results of stress is chronic anger,” Lippin said.

Morrow is a single mom who recently moved from Brooklyn to Rockland.

Lippin said Morrow seems like a good person who had a really, really bad day.

“I think we have to look at her with a lot of compassion and absolutely with ‘there by the grace of God go I.’ I think we’ve all felt those feelings, we’ve all felt those physical sensations. She did not control them,” Lippin said.

“At the end of the day, the situation got out of hand and I’m apologetic for it. I’m highly apologetic for it,” Morrow said.

She’s sorry, ashamed and unlucky. Her angry outburst happened in a store with 13 surveillance cameras.

Morrow surrendered to police Wednesday night after CBS 2 first aired the surveillance video. She’s charged with criminal mischief, a felony that could land her in prison for more than a year.

Do you think this woman’s apology should fall on deaf ears or do you feel compassion for her? Let us know below.

    She’s keepin’ it Real.

  • rudy

also imagine because of what she did in the store you decide to eat at dave and busters what she would do to your food when she has a bad day?!

  • rudy

that was so very stupid due the crime do the time must have been expensive too

  • CheckForSpitInYourBurger

she sho’ buster’d up da place!

    • Mahogany Morrow

I sho’ll dids, aint nobodys gonna disrespeks me.

    Dear Mahogany,

A clerk can say ANYTHING they want and you still can’t break all those bottles.

    Dear Ruth Lippin,

Mahogany is not a good person.

    Mahogany is a bad person.

  • People

You people obviously are the majority… She was dead wrong and should serve her time, but this nor any other case should blind anyone’s eyes to the prevalence of racism in the U.S.A. You wouldn’t be tired of hearing people say they are mistreated because of their race if you were one of them.

    • JoeD

I see someone is spilling over with white guilt!

  • Chris P

That “you people” line is a LOAD OF BS! I’ve been falsely accused of using it too when a black patron didn’t get what she wanted. She told my supervisor I used the phrase “you people” to try and paint me with the broad “racist brush.” This girl is straight up GHETTO and is feeding off white guilt! Don’t fall for it!

  • Matthew

While that comment may seem racist on the surface, it holds a grain of truth. Is that to say all blacks are like that? No. However, it’s people like this that enforce the stereotype and give everyone else a bad name.

  • Margie

She’s the epitamy of trash, clearly. And it’s NOT because she’s black. I hate how people always make it a race issue. She was 100% in the wrong and needs to stop pulling the race card as a way to make herself the victim. We are all stressed, join the club! We all have a bad day once in a while but we don’t wreck businesses. Make her pay for all the damaged property, put her on probation, and definitely community service. She’s just classless, and yes, it’s absolutely frightening that she has kids

  • Matthew

The term “you people” is ambiguous at best. It could’ve meant anything. She overreacted to a simple phrase. Irregardless of that fact, it’s no excuse to destroy someone’s business over it. No matter what was said, there is no justification for it. As a result, the charge of Criminal Mischief is absolutely appropriate. In addition, I think that she should not just get off with probation. Although, I don’t think she should go to jail for a year or more. Personally, I think they should plea bargain her to a Class A Misdemeanor, fine her and force her to pay for all damages. It’s simple. Just because something is a first offense, that doesn’t mean that it warrants probation.

  • BlaakCoworkersHallOfFame

    “the Y.P. phrase”…

  • Brenda cheek

It’s behavior like this that makes them “You people”,they just don’t get that, want to blame everyone else for their problems.Never take personal responsability. We all have stress these days..I haven’t wrecked a buisness because of something someone SAID, But “Those people” think they can do anything they want..all they got to do is claim race..works in detroit too.

  • Bored

It was a liquor store, which makes her “you people” defence highly suspicious. Liquor store clerks are used to all kinds of people, mostly rude ones, and rarely bat an eye at verbal abuse. Note that the clerk was also on that video!!! Even if the video camera doesn’t pick up sound, anyone can lip-read. Her “defence” is unrepentant. Ms. Morrow doesn’t offer to pay for the property she destroyed either

  • brooklyn4ever

Where’s Reverend Al when ya need him?

  • Mee

Black people (in NYC anyway) seem to be an angry lot and interpret any sort of disagreement with them as a form of racism. They conveniently use the race card to excuse bad and obnoxious behavior. They’re always loud and aggressive and think you’re racist if you tell them to pipe down. I am Asian and I can tell you for a fact that a lot of black people don’t like Asians to the point of being racists themselves.

  • Cheryl Kurtz

Put the money in a cage.

  • Mr. Armenia

Why does she still have a job at Dave And Busters?

    • Ma'Kesia Blumpkin

Because she’s your wife, and someone’s gotta bring home the bacon.

  • E-bear

At first when I saw this story, I figured she’s probably be making a statement against alcohol abuse, which doesn’t give her excuse to do what she did, but at least it’d be for a reason.
But then I read on. What if everyone acted out whenever they were having a bad day? People like her disgust me. It doesn’t take a child to have a child-like tantrum.
And speaking of that… I feel bad for her children and the fact that she didn’t consider them before doing something that might land her in jail.

Camera Surveillance System installed by my dad’s company Labco Systems!

  • John

It’s time to start making doors 1 foot wide so you people can’t come in and trash the place anymore.

  • Longfellow

Its a Good thing she wasn’t ‘Strapped’,
Someone in the store, coulda been ‘Capped’

  • John

Her two big mistakes: not bringing in a man to blame, and not remembering to slip and fall on the liguor so she could sue for one or two million. Clearly she is not the brightest bulb.

  • John

Nothing will happen over it, she’s a woman and women are allowed do be as violent and destructive as they want. Case dismissed.

  • Mr. Armenia

Sounds like she snapped because the clerk made a racial comment towards her.
She could have handled her self better if this is what happened.

    • C.J.

Those people always feel that people are racist against them when they are the real racists.

  • Holiday Willie

The first ‘change’ needed in this country is to TEST people before they have children…Maybe someone with the name Mahogany should be tested TWICE before she brings another Mahogany into the world…Its the beginning of the end, folks..Strap on your seat belts.

  • Yogi Washburn

You people would be those who can’t behave civilly, obviously.

    • Dave

This comment said it all ……

  • gg

send her back to NYC she can’t be in a civilized society…

  • chris

You know what? When I get angry, I think about doing stuff like this too.. But there’s the difference. I THINK about it – I don’t do it. It’s called impulse control, and adults are expected to have it.

Sorry doesn’t replace the owner’s lost profit, or the man hours spent cleaning. Accepting a “Sorry” doesn’t teach the overgrown child that their behavior is unacceptable.

She should be made to pay damages, lost wages/sales during cleanup, plus do community service and probation. If she’s truly a “good person having a bad day” that kind of lesson will leave a mark and teach her to handle her emotions like an adult instead of like a 4 year old.

And shame on her for trying to subtly pull the race card, casting dispersions and trying to lay blame elsewhere.

    Shame, shame, shame.

  • killshot

She turned herself in only because she was caught on camera. Forget jail. Just fine her and make her pay for the damage.

  • Frank

I live in Westchester and met friends at Dave and Buster’s a lot last football season but I’m not going there anymore if they employ trash like this woman.

    • lasstime

Go Frank! I hope your friends are wealthy and numerous enough for an actual result to occur. People like this lardbutt heifer are a part of the poison thats killing America.

    • Infini24

Don’t worry Dave Buster won’t lose out on you leaving their Services. and I bet your friends will still go there. How Stupid can you be to boycott a well establish Bar/game/restaurant. cause of One worker there. You won’t make a difference. and everybody don’t want your kind at Dave Busters anyway

      • Frank

Well, Infini…I know a little bit about business and marketing. I emailed the guys I hang out with there and each one of us is going to call Dave and Buster’s to let them know we won’t be going back there because we don’t want to run into this psycho. I bet my friends and I will be watching a game there and Mahogany WON’T be working there.

  • David Goldstein

I’m sick of seeing You People in the news everyday.

    • Infini24

I’m Sick for you People Period. Mr Goldstein.

  • Rob

Sorry…go to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $2,000.

  • stoneman

At least she won’t have to go to the liquor store for a while. She’ll have plenty of time to make her own hooch in jail now.

  • Why Shaggy

Sara you hit it right on the head

  • John Prewett

Another report mentioned she asked to use the restroom. Are liquor stores in NY required to have public restrooms ?

  • John Prewett

ACLU lawyers walking by the beat up mugging victim. One says “whoever did this needs help”. Looks like this woman needs help.

  • frannie

Stressed, and want to vent !?!?
Get in line with the rest of us.
Spoiled brat behavior. She didn’t have the right to destroy
property that didn’t belong to her.
Pay back the owner in full for her internet hissy-fit.
She got caught on camera or she would still be
    thinking her deed was justified.

  • Harry R

Hell no, no one has the right to destroy someone elses property, if your mad go home & cool off, she should pay the damages & do jail time

  • Claude R

She did a very bad thing, but at least she turned herself in and is willing to own up to it. If it’s her first offense, then I think she should be sentenced to pay for the damages, attend anger management, and some probation.

    • Bart Simpson

First offense or first time caught ?

      • Claude R

You have a point. That’s why I think probation is in order, to keep an eye on her and (hopefully) make sure she stays out of trouble.
