Columbia Students Sound Off On Northwestern’s Live Sex Ed Class

Bizarre Incident At Chicago-Area School Creating Quite The Buzz

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — New York City college students weighed in on the controversy Thursday after learning of a sex education demonstration at one of the nation’s more revered universities.

It has been the talk of Northwestern University, outside Chicago. The demonstration was conducted after a psychology class. A drill with a special attachment was used on a female student, wrapped in a towel, and in front more than 100 students.

“Most of the people who stayed were, in fact, trying to get a better view,” one student said.

“I don’t feel like I would want to see that,” another student said.

Guest lecturer Ken Melvoin-Berg, who was invited to the class by Professor J. Michael Bailey, is defending the voluntary demonstration as educational — a couple engaged in a sex act.

“We warned students five times at least,” Melvoin-Berg said. “He brought her to orgasm right there on stage and that was the end of it, other than the fact that we had positive comments from everybody in the class.”

At Columbia University, there were both positive and negative comments.

“I guess it’s up the students and what they want to watch. They can make their own choices,” freshman Joey Donino said.

“It’s absolutely not appropriate. I don’t even see the logic behind it,” graduate student Kristin Bush added.

“As long as each student knows what the course is about, I feel no harm no foul,” graduate student Victor Sawyer said.

So the moral of the story is what may be objectionable to one student is totally acceptable to another.

“It’s supposed to be a discussion. It’s not supposed to be a visual demonstration,” one student said.

New York City sex therapist Jane Greer said the Northwestern class was hardly education. It was more voyeuristic and pornographic. And as for the contraption seen on the video …

“It sounds like it was a drill-do instead of a dildo, if you will,” Greer said. “Sexual activity coming alive is crossing the border into pornography. It’s really not education.”

At the very least it’s not the college education, students and parents would typically expect.

So what do you think of this controversy? Please tell us you thoughts below.

So? And in our recent news: A sack of rice fell over in China.
This is education – we are decidedly NOT in the medieval ages anymore, last time I checked

  • (Actual) (Legit) Northwestern Student

I beat off to this nobody saw me, I was doing a sexual demonstration of my own.

  • KT

    who cares?

  • giuseppe sanfrancesco

This very sick , to have young college students to have this for a class. That is why most of young are lost, when you have sick person teaching a class about sex. This person should be arrested . Not teaching at a college.

  • Alan

Herodotus, get a life for gods sake.

  • Larry Rand

If that act were performed in a club everyone would be in jail. Paying money to witness a sex act. How much does it cost to take that class and can I obtain a federal education grant?

  • Northwestern Student

The female was not a student, it was a professional. This is an example of poor journalism, good work CBS

    • David

A professional what? You have to kidding! Unfortunately, I take it you are not.

    • David

If this had been performed on a dog people would have been up at arms.
“Next Week, how to use a Black and Deck-her!”
When the first college student tries this in his dorm room and kills his girlfriend North Western should be held completely liable and this student is critiquing the journalism!
Maybe you should reconsider your choice of educators. If a man asked his wife if he could use a power tool on her and she said yes, he should be concerned. If she says no, he is probably out of there.
“Did you go to school stupid? Yeah, but not THAT stupid!”

  • Herodotus

Perhaps our schools should also teach young people about “houses of rostitution” and where the women (and often young girls) come from…and the many “slave sex” rings are now being operated around the world. Also about the serious sexually transmitted diseases that can be contracted through sex before marriage. Aids (hiv virus) is ravaging our world now. It is something that must be taught in our public (and private) schools. Narcotics usage is probably our second greatest problem. This is already being addressed in our educational institutions. (Am I the only commentor ???)

  • Herodotus

Correction to my first comment. It was a drill …not a saw …that was used as a “tool” in the controversial sexual demonstration. (

  • herodotus

It was a fairly common practice for American Fathers to educate their sons in what sex is all about by taking them to a house of prostitution ….back in the 30’s and 40’s. Young men often visited houses of prostitution to find out what it was like to mate with a female human being.

Sex education is far better…it would seem to me. Many of these young men probably contracted diseases in the houses of prostitution. Nuff said !

  • Herodotus

Sorry, I did not see the “saw converted into a sexual tool” before I made my previous comment. That part seems rather silly and even dangeroous as well. Was a Doctor consulted before using this “tool” ? The whole episode should have been under medical supervision. Perhaps it was..but that is not stated ion the article itself.

  • Herodotus

We have all kinds of taboos and much ignorance about our human bodies that is not found in many other places in our world. As children we are “shielded” from anything having to do with sexual mating. In this respect we are probably the most ignorant people on the planet…and this leaves our young adults with practically no knowledge of our reporduction event. Christianity is largely responsible for much of this…but Islam is probably more responsible worldwide. At any rate , as far as I know, men and women and children have bathed in common pools of water with no clothing for centuries in places such as Japan. What is all the secrecy about ? Young people simply cannot deal effecdtively with their natural sexual feelings…if they are kept in ignorance.
