NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Pollen is exploding all throughout the Tri-State this weekend as winter comes to an end.

Allergist researchers from Rutgers University say because of the cold and wet winter, the Tri-State is going to have a high pollen count.

LISTEN: WCBS 880′s Sean Adams spoke with Dr. Leonard Cilli about the pollen explosion

“This spring is going to be one of the strongest pollinating springs we’ve seen in years,” Dr. Leonard Cilli with the Rutgers Center of Environmental Prediction said. “There will be extreme higher bursts in pollen in the next 48 hours so this weekend is going to be very strong.”

Due to the snow melt, trees and plants received more nutrients than normal and will release higher pollen counts than normal.

“Normally pollen counts will reach several hundred-fold in the past 48 hours alone. We’ve seen approximately 1,600 just for trees and its going to take off and it will come down again,” Cilli said.

Cilli said research going on right now is looking to see if climate change is lengthening the allergy season since the season has increased in time by about a week.
