"Back in January of this year, we were notified that DNA lab had a match," Sgt. Richard Callahan said.
Detectives said Zerat became a part of the New York state DNA index system when he was convicted of a separate crime. Under New York state law, most inmates behind bars must submit DNA samples that are stored in the index system.
The original crime took place in October 2009 when a woman came home in Westbury on Long Island to find some of her belongings stolen.
