NEW YORK (CBS 2) – A young boy was reunited with his family after a terrifying ride in Queens on Friday.

Police said a 9-year-old boy was sitting in the backseat of his father’s SUV when a car thief jumped inside and drove away. The boy’s dad had done inside a bodega on the Van Wyck Expressway and left his son in the car with the engine running.

The father realized his cell phone was in the car and quickly dialed the number.

“He called his cellphone. The guy picked up and gave the phone to the kid and told the kid, ‘Tell your parents you’re okay. Come and get you over here,’” Springfield Gardens resident Yvette Calderon said.

The boy was not hurt.

Police are still looking for the carjacking suspect.
