Men Falsely Accused In 1989 ‘Central Park Jogger’ Attack Seek Justice

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Protesters stood on the steps of City Hall Tuesday demanding justice 22 years after the rape of a woman known as “The Central Park jogger” shocked the city.

City Councilman Charles Barron led a demonstration insisting New York City compensate the “Central Park 5,” who were exonerated in the attack nearly 8 years ago, for their lost years and wrongful imprisonment.

“My life was stolen from me. And so now as a 36-year-old man going on 37, who would have a stable career with his own apartment, own car, a family. I don’t have any of that. So this is where my problem is,” Raymond Santana, one of the falsely accused men said.

Trisha Meili, a small, 28-year-old old investment banker was dragged, beaten and sexually assaulted on April 19, 1989. She was found bloody and near death hours later. When Meili finally gained consciousness, she couldn’t remember anything about the horrible attack.

The crime became a symbol for the times, and gave rise to the term “wilding” where gangs of youths roamed the park, terrorizing anyone who crossed their paths.

Police quickly arrested a handful of young men and eventually got Santana along with Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson and Kharey Wise to confess on video tape. They also implicated a fifth suspect — Yusef Salaam.

The cases divided the city along racial lines. The Central Park 5 went to prison with sentences ranging from six to sixteen years.

The five men were exonerated in 2002 when the actual rapist in the attack came forward.

“It’s been a long time — twenty-two years of my life. America, we just got to do something. We got to do something. I been waiting a long time for justice,” Wise said.

Santana said he and the other 4 men accused “were taken from our homes, robbed of our youth, given labels of ‘rapist, monsters, animals’ or ‘wolf pack.'” On the 22nd anniversary of the attack, Santana said the day reminded him of the “struggle, hardship, pain and suffering.”

Each of the five men are seeking $50 million in damages, but their lawyers said so far the city has refused to settle.

SOUND-OFF: Do you think the city should compensate the “Central Park 5?” Do you think they will be successful with their lawsuit?  Let us know in the comments section…

Here is what happened. At the time, the New York media reported as honestly on this case as it knew how, while censoring its transparently racial aspect, and refusing to report on the racist campaign publicly waged on the victim by the attackers’ black supremacist supporters.

Then and now, the victim’s doctors and the police officers who investigated the crime all said that it was impossible for one man to have alone committed such a savage attack. The attackers’ supporters fabricated the current story, kept up at it, over the years, and were eventually joined by co-conspirators in the media (like our Mr. Brooks, the Daily News’ Alice McQuillan, et al.) and in then-Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau’s office.

  2. Nicholas Stix says:

I’d say “shame on you” to alleged reporter Stan Brooks, but Brooks obviously has no shame. None of these men was “falsely accused,” and none was “exonerated.”

They were all guilty as hell, and remain guilty as hell. Their confessions were all legitimate, and given in the presence of parents or guardians, they knew things that only the attackers could have known, and when they were convicted, even their attorneys said that it was impossible to get them off, due to their having incriminated themselves both during their confessions and in court, and because saying they were elsewhere in the park at the time would have entailed confessing to other violent felonies.

Brooks is also lying when he says “The crime became a symbol for the times, and gave rise to the term “wilding” where gangs of youths roamed the park, terrorizing anyone who crossed their paths.”

As he well knows, the gangs were predominantly black (the rest were Hispanic), and were out hunting white people. But wait a minute! Brooks claims in the same story that there was no gang; it was just one guy. Like the thugs he defends, he can’t keep his lies straight.

In fact, the five who were lawfully convicted had dozens of racist crime partners that night who were variously allowed to skate, or never caught.

you’re a moron! i read the transcripts of kharey wise and the real crime was that he was found guilty by a bunch of idiot jurors….no evidence at all connecting him to the crime.

i wish God take all the racist from the world…or leave them here and take us away to a better world

  4. Erin Murphy says:

@ all commenters who doubt the innocence of “The Central Park Five” I recommend you read Sarah Burns’ “The Central Park Five: A Chronicle of a City Wilding” for an accurate an unbiased look at the facts of this case. It is clear that these young men were involved in a night of petty crime, but that is all. The minors had their rights violated as they were psychologically abused and coerced into confessing by police officers both eager to solve a case and blinded by race and assumption. The confessions of the wrongly convicted reek of incorrect and differing accounts of the alleged rape but all correctly identify the facts involved in the lesser attacks earlier that evening. The discrepancies and lack of physical evidence should have been damning to the case against them. However, the racial tensions involved skewed the verdict. It is the detectives and prosecutors of this case that should be tried.

    1. running man kent says:

erin is correct….and if anyone ever read the transcripts (and i read kharey wise’s), there is no way a halfway intelligent juror would have found any of these guys guilty. the detectives who coerced the b.s. confessions should be tried for what they did!

  5. oneharlemgirlsopinion says:

@should have shipped them out a long time ago
Sweetie, like previously stated please research your history before speaking to a grown up.

    1. oneharlemgirlsopinion says:

Whose fact? Yours? Roots! Serously….I wouldn’t base my facts on something that was obviously glamourized by Hollywood to make sales. Also what exactly am I as an individual supposed to be taking responsibilty for? The house I own? The car I drive? Or my business that I worked my tail to the bone for…..Honestly I don’t even know why I’m justifying myself to someone who is evidently miserable with their life. Why else would you come on here to spit pure hatred and classify a whole race of people into one single group. I do hope that you are young because maybe when you grow into adulthood life will start to become less about your hate and more about living. If by chance you are over 30 it’s purely pitiful that you have to blame an entire race for YOUR SHORTCOMINGS but it’s not going to help you feel better about yourself. Anything else you want to write feel free to because I have wasted enough energy playing into negativity with you and you know the saying Misery loves company, fortunately, I am very choosy about the company I keep.

  6. oneharlemgirlsopinion says:

    K8TiE,
Sniffle, sniffle, sniffle??? Really?? This coming from a grown person?? The sarcastic tears weren’t necessary because not once did I imply that I was distributing a sob story. By the way, the nation saw the video confessions they were all over the news…The fact that you claim to have worked this case does not impress me either due to the fact that I personally grew up in the same area as these young men and happened to know one of them personally. Your facts are way off. I will not stand up and say that I know these guys are innocent but I know for sure one was, which leads me to believe that maybe, just maybe they all are. I mean hell, even the courts believed they were hence, them walking the streets free now.I do find it kind of disturbing that you claim to work for the law and you are on here with your one man conviction show and the constant bringing up of the fact that they were eating Mcdonalds, is that supposed to mean something?? …the repression was evident by the way.

  7. usmcmaggot says:

  8. oneharlemgirlsopinion says:

Reading these comments causes one to laugh to themselves because everyone claims to be educated on the subject of which they are speaking of….The first thing I’ll address, though I don’t know why I’m even bothering because I’m sure majority of these comments are coming from the same person is the racist remarks of “go home, thugs, animals, etc.”..Seriously when will the racist people understand that this country doesn’t belong to you either. It was violently stolen and not only that, we didn’t ask to come here, we were violently placed here. Please educate yourself before making ignorant comments; I’m almost sure you’re probably a child and if you aren’t then you’ve clearly failed at adulthood. Next, is the topic which has been ignored. These gentlemen may have confessed to this crime but as a person who grew up in the same area as them I know how many times confessions were coerced out of young Black and Hispanic men by these officers who brutally beat us in the name of the law. Who is to say what would have become of one of these young men if their youth wasn’t stolen from them. I know the person I am now is a far cry from the person I was then. So who are you to put a figure on what their life was worth? Yes, I do agree that 5 million is an astronomical amount but the years that were stolen from them are priceless.

    1. K8tie says:

sniffle sniffle sniffle! IF YOU SAW THE VIDEOTAPED CONFESSIONS (which you most certainly did not) you would have seen that these stupid POS were in no way coerced or beaten, etc. In fact their PARENT was there (mostly 1 parent — but in one case the parent(s) never showed up to the police station, nice, real nice), they were all eating McDonalds like it was a lazy Sunday as they recounted in brutal detail what they ALL did to this woman and to all the others in the park that night. THEY CONFESSED that they went to the park to cause trouble. Wake up Ms. Harlem “I’m so repressed….”

Then Bob “weekend-At-Bernie’s” Morgenthau drops the charges.

I know this case — I worked on it!!! These 5 savages are ALL guilty! Reyes took the fall because he was conveniently in he same prison as one of the 5 and was a budding Bloods gang member. Sure Reyes was there that night, but there’s NO QUESTION that she was attacked and beaten by multiple savages. I have seen the videotaped confessions and the evidence. In fact, the video confession of K. Wise was so “matter of fact” and nonchalant! He sat there for 2 hours telling the story, in vivid detail, with his parents by his side, while eating McDonalds!

    1. TO K8TIE says:

YEAH RIGHT. IS THAT YOU MR. TRUMP?

      1. WOW! says:

Pull your skirt down K8tie. I can see your TEA BAGS. First of all you are trying to sound informed but it is obvious you are just an angry white man impersonating a woman. Is K8tie your other persona? If you are a cop, you are probably one of the “BOYS” on the feel up black men’s bodies all day every day squad. Are you one of the “BOYS” who jumps at the chance to “STOP N FRISK” all those pretty black and brown boys 300,000 times a year? Hmmmm. ORRR, maybe you have a serious case of TARZAN SYNDROME. You really use the word SAVAGES alot. Did your high school sweetheart bang the black guy on the football team that cut you? Poor K8tie.

    2. Frank D says:

  16. History Major says:

If you study the history of the NYPD, they have always been a bunch of thugs that were used by wealthy businessmen, corrupt politicians, and criminals to help them get what they want in this city. Beginning in the 1870s, politics and corruption of Tammany Hall, a political machine supported by Irish immigrants infiltrated the NYPD, which was used as political tool, with positions awarded by politicians to loyalists. Many officers and leaders in the police department took bribes from local businesses, overlooking things like illegal liquor sales. Police also served political purposes such as manning polling places, where they would turn a blind eye to ballot box stuffing and other acts of fraud. Historically the NYPD has been brutal to the poor people of this city. A tradition that continues to this very day.

    1. Bob Fowler says:

OK, so the NYPD is not beyond reproach. Fine. Now what? Shall every person ever questioned, suspected, arrested, tried, convicted, be allowed to walk away and sue for fortunes beyond what they would reasonably earn in 20 life times?

These young ‘men’ were convicted in a court of law. They were represented by competent legal counsel. They videotaped confessions, which, had they been acquired under duress, would have been excluded by their competent legal counsel. The fact that someone else admitted guilt years later does not change the fact they were apparently part of the pack that set upon this woman.

What exactly do they deserve? Because they were born black, they deserve a free hand? Because the NYPD is, as you call them, a bunch of thugs, anyone who commits a crime is allowed to cry prejudice?

The reality of this story is not a civil rights issue. The issue at hand is a city councilman is trying to secure a name for himself. Try to see the forest for the trees.

      1. To Bob says:

I am no politician nor do I have the desire to be. I am just one poor black man who has never committed a crime, but has still been a victim of this gang of brutes. We can fix the problem and save the city millions of dollars and grief by simply holding unruly cops, prosecutors, and judges accountable. I am also tired of phony blacks making promises to get elected and then turning their backs on the people that supported them. WE NEED LAW ENFORCEMENT and I do support good cops. I don’t care about race. Liars, crooks and murderers come in all colors and religions. I’m sure however if white people were victims of this kind of B.S. there would be a serious overhaul of of the NYPD and it’s practices. But I guess it’s okay as long as no white people are harmed.

      2. ABM says:

        HEY BOB,
IF IT ONLY HAPPENS TO PEOPLE OF A CERTAIN RACE, THAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE DUMMY! You sound like one of those white guys that gets really scared whenever a black man stands up for anything. Let me ease your mind and soothe your fears.
        WE DON’T WANT YOUR BLOOD.
        WE DON’T WANT YOUR WOMEN.
WE JUST WANT TO BE ALLOWED TO LIVE OUR LIVES LIKE THE REST OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS CITY.
WE WANT OUR FAIR SHARE OF THE AMERICAN DREAM THAT WAS BUILT ON THE BACKS OF OUR ANCESTORS.
We all can have beautiful lives in this world if you would be BRAVE ENOUGH TO CONFRONT THE FEW GREEDY PEOPLE THAT ARE REALLY KEEPING US DOWN AND STOP LETTING THEM USE YOU AS A BUFFER ZONE BETWEEN US AND THEM. CHECK YOUR OWN PEOPLE AND WE WILL CHECK OURS AND THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE FOR EVERYONE.

  17. RECORD STRAIGHT SETTER says:

Where is ERIC ADAMS on this issue? Silent because he is THE WHITE MAN’S DOG. ERIC ADAMS only speaks when his master commands him to. ERIC ADAMS and the other 100 BLACKS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT only talk when the NYPD needs a black face to help them out of a jam. Time after time whenever the NYPD violates people he is either silent or advocating on their behalf. VOTE ERIC ADAMS OUT OF OFFICE. Blacks need to learn that just because he is black he is not for us. HE IS AGAINST US AND WORKS FOR THE RACIST NYPD AGAINST US FOR HIS WEALTHY ELITE MASTERS WHO OWN THE 6th CRIME FAMILY.

They confessed to the crime on video and they got what they deserved.

    1. Seymore says:

David, get a grip…..Black men and the NYPD…haven’t you learn anything in your life…If your black you are guilty to be proven innocent…if your white you are innocent until proven guilty…now I said it…prejudice will always prevail with small minded people

      1. voiceofreason says:

Seymore, you are wrong. David is right. They confessed END OF STORY. Thanks for the insight Mr. Goldstein.

  19. Bob Fowler says:

I’m a bit confused at how they can claim wrongful imprisonment, when they confessed to the crime? That being said, I am also confused at the $50 million per person settlement request.

A ‘normal’ high school graduate would, over the course of their work life, earn less than $2 million. These ‘premier’ gentlemen didn’t appear to have that high an upside, based upon their lives to that point. This entitles them to $50 million each?

I also liked the sad song about how now, years after the fact, a 36 year old man claims to be unable to have “a stable career with his own apartment, own car, a family.” Did admitting to a crime 20 years ago take away his ability to act like any other grown-up? It wasn’t easy for most of us. We took entry level jobs, worked hard, acted responsibly, tried to better ourselves…all without the benefit of the world feeling sorry for us.

Councilman Barron should be ashamed of himself, pandering for votes like this. Sadly, his constituents will probably only see him as a cash cow for others, and re-elect him in hopes that they too will get theirs.

    1. Trish says:

I agree, they should not get $50 million each. However, I also understand the “sad song”. Even thought they have been exonorated of the crime, they are still being persecuted by the public, just read some of the comments here. Hence, they are unable to go forward because their past goes with them guilty or not. They should get $3 million each, $1 million for the greedy lawyers and $2 million for each….after taxes, the government has a tendency to take…

    2. Oh really? says:

BOB FOWLER, if you are a NYer, then YOU are his Constituent.
Ever read the law? No, no, not the Law & Order version. The one in the binders.

“But Matias Reyes, currently serving a 33-year sentence for raping and murdering another woman in 1989, told prison guards in January that he alone was responsible for the Central Park rape. DNA testing determined that semen found on the jogger belonged to Reyes, and his pubic hair was on her sock.

That evidence, combined with “significant weaknesses” in the men’s confessions, “increases the probability that the evidence would result in a different verdict,” Morgenthau stated in a 58-page motion Thursday.”

“Significant weaknesses”, but clearly not too weak to convict. Whether or not you consider this a civil rights issue is insignificant. Just like many others who were wrongly convicted of a crime and served many years have been compensated, they too deserve to be. Have you ever spent a decade or more in jail? Do you think the compensation should just equal the pay they would have amassed while they were locked up? CMON! Im not surprised by your response though. So, in your opinion, they should go about their merry way and just be happy to free now? Thats what you would do, right?

    4. Carol Brown says:

dna shows that they were innocent…also I can understand how ppl confessed to crimes they did not commit. they are somethign in the holding room for days at a time they lies anything to get a confession. I worked for customer service and a cop asked for some info I gave it to him he called back wanting me to appear in court i told him no he starts “YOU are going to deny ME, an officer” he was very intimidating and i had to get a supervisor to get him off my back so imagine in person over hours and hours b4 we judge we should walk in the other person’s shoes

  20. Jay Dee says:

These guy were found not guilty after being wrongly accused. It seem funny because they are black young men some of you “folks” have no sympaty for them. I know you are the same folks that waited objectively to see if that white Duke Lacrosse player really raped & killed that white woman, even the rapist/killer of Jennifer Levin(remember that one 1986) in Central Park. Its a shame when it comes to some “folks” they are so objective when it comes to their own race.
Yes, they deserved to be paid, but of course not $50 mil. a piece. More like $5 mil. a piece. You have to realize too that the State of New York & the Federal Gov. is going to tax the heck outta their settlement anyway. So its a win-win situation.

The missing perp has come forward and admitted guilt to the rape. The men that served their time as accomplices were just as guilty so there was no error made therefore they are not worthy of a dime. If the city pays these thugs, the city and those of power are fools.

$50 million each is too much. I understand that they spent time in prison, but if they were out I doubt that for that period of time they would have made $50 million each. i am praying that they do get some kind of money from the police department cause they wrongly accused of something that they didn,t do and and they weren,t questioines with there parents present so i strongly believe that they do have a chance to get that money ….and the cops that didn,t look into it need to be questioned and go to jail for not looking into who really did that crime at that time..

    1. h says:

kendra if you graduated from any school that was a crime
