NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A woman was stabbed in the head with a pen by a homeless man during the morning rush at Chambers Street subway station Tuesday, police said.

The woman confronted the man about smoking a cigarette on a 3 Train as they train pulled into the station in Tribeca. That’s when he allegedly attacked.

Witnesses held the man until officers arrested him.

Straphangers who spoke with 1010 WINS’ Al Jones said they were shocked to hear about the incident.

“I mean something is really wrong with him.  Maybe he had a bad day, he woke up on the bad side of the bed,” one man said.

“I think it’s absolutely bizarre. I’ve never heard such a crazy story that happened in the subway,” another man said.

The woman was taken to Beekman Downtown Hospital in stable condition. The man was placed under arrest. Charges are pending.

Including the guy who helped subdue the homeless person.

But seriously, people, don’t pick an argument with a homeless person who is probably mentally ill. It’s not a good idea.

  • HARLEM GOING H.A.M.

THE 1st RULE OF BEING A NY’ER? MIND YOUR BUSINESS, WHICH IS LIKE RULE #2, KEEP YOUR BIG MOUTH SHUT. IF THAT LADY WOULD OBEYED THOSE RULES, SHE WOULD BE O.K. HOWEVER, HER ACTIONS SHOULDN’T OF BEEN A REASON TO STAB HER. IF THE GUY IS SANE, OFF WITH THE HEAD, LET’S PLAY THE TUDORS GAME WITH HIM.

  • Paul Gjokaj

New Yorkers know to mind their business. She must of been new to town? Poor lady.

    • KPMc

No… those are the transplants from Ohio that move to Williamsburg that mind their own business. Real New Yorkers have the balls to say something when something is wrong.

I’m guessing you were raised in Ohio or some other state we usually fly over.

  • Everyman

Maybe it was “that time of the month”.

  • Bell Toller

Did the lady make racial remarks towards him?

    • Chuck Woolery

      Maybe she grabbed his yambag.

  • Aceof Spades

There goes it. You see someone smoking something on the train you don’t confront them. You leave them alone. There is obviously something wrong with them. Unless you are willing to defend your self after confronting someone. I suggest you keep it down or tell the conductor.

  • LG

Thank God that I don’t need to use those filthy subway trains.

    • KPMc

That’s funny… I was just saying.. “Thank God that filth LG doesn’t ride the subway anymore”

  • Jessica

Homeless people normally seem to have mental issues. it’s so weird to me that she confronted him about a cigarette. This lady sounds single with cats. I think cigarettes are good for them because they help mask the body odor. Whatever though at least i didnt get stabbed in the head. I wonder what kind of pen it was.

    • Homeful Harry

That idiot broad got what she asked for.

    • Single with kitties

Jessica, I love your quirky train of thought :)

  • David Goldstein

How about a description of the suspect?

    • KPMc

Why? He was caught. You don’t need to be on the look out for him but thanks for trying to do your part.

Now go find the rabbi who raped his own daughters and fled to Israel. Do you need a description for that one?

      • IKnowItAll

        You’re an idiot.

      • Thass cold, yo

        KPMc,

        Oh, sweat!

  • kendra

i know i would have never have approached a homeless person either cause they could do very bad damage to any1 all shw had to do was move someehere else…was it worth it.i hope she gets well soon…

  • Wolf

Where are the police or some sort of security in EVERY subway station protecting us hard working, tax paying and FARE paying people? The homeless sneak in and don’t pay a dime and this is exactly what happens. Clean up the damn city Bloomberg. Get rid of the homeless. Over half of them are not citizens. Let the countries they came from support them. US tax paying citizens are getting tired of fotting the bill with hard work and blood shed.

    • Hard Working, Nearly Evicted

Bloomberg has caused thousands of New Yorkers, hardworking or not, to become homeless. The homeless rate in NYC has skyrocketed during his reign.

  • EricG

Nextime she should MYOFB. Remember the spaghetti incident????????????????

  • SUE

TO THE PERSON WHO IS A FRIEND OF A COP IS AN ASS. THIS IS NOT A FUNNY THING. MAYBE SHE DIDNE REALIZE HE WAS HOMELESS. WHO KNOWS WHAT SHE SAID. I BET HE WOULD OF DID THIS TO SOMEONE ELSE.

    • Urine Nation

      Sue,

“would of” —> comedy GOLD, baby!

  • brooklyn4ever

Yeah, it’s against the law to smoke in the train stations, but obviously you are either a smoking idiot lookng for trouble or are a smoking mentally disturbed person who needs to obviously be off the streets like this guy. Either way, this is NYC people and you have to be crazier than either of my examples to approach anyone and start trouble. Do not think ever for a minute that there will never be repercussions if you challenge these kinds of people. Is it really worth ruining your day over?

  • Anthony

How did they know that the man was homeless? Where does a homeless person get the money to buy cigarettes? Why was the homeless person carrying a pencil? There are three quick ways that a homeless person can get housing. He can commit a crime and get thrown into jail. He can join the priesthood. He can go to Lottery headquarters and ask them to give him the winning lottery numbers ahead of time. If the woman was annoyed by secondhand smoke, all she had to to was walk to the other end of the platform. This story is filled with secondhand smoke and secondhand information.

    Another Bernie Goetz wanna be.

  • Marina Ios

i dont understand……here, in nyc, you need to completely avoid any kind of confrontation with anyone, not only homeless, or disturbed or drunk, or whatever…..you can never know what mental state a person is in, what kind of medication is on…
i am serious, not joking, when i am in the subway, i always have a newspaper, magazine, or simply pretend that i am napping, so i dont make any eye contact with strangers…..there are disturbed, angry, or simply fed up people who might react in aggressive ways,
and, by the way, this second hand smoke hysteria is becoming a little exaggerated, fyi try to analyze what you are inhaling daily from cars, paintings, rat poisons, etc

  • xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My friend is a cop who was there and the man and woman were divorced and she wanted the box he lived in next after taking all his money and the house ..

  • kenny

Do this lady know how many other people seen this man smoking and did not say a word that should have told her something. She was on attack mode as soon as she got on the platform, I have to agree with Brian the homeless on this and I to hope she recovers. Lady you are not NYPD…….

  • Homey “G”

Anyone who would confront a homeless person is just looking for trouble! Almost all of them seem to be mentally deranged and not in touch w/ reality. Hey, report it to a cop if you feel the need to take action. Tough lesson learned!

  • Douglas Reid

The homeless on the subways have made a big come back. On the R line, last Saturday, was a man who was throwing garbage on the seats and then picking it up. I have seen him before, on Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn. On my line, which is the C train, the beggars are back big time in Brookyn. At West 4th street, in Manhattan, are plenty of homeless taking up the benches and the odor is extremely powerful.

    • Stan

      Doug,

      You should marry that guy.

  • Steve

I guess second hand smoke can kill you.

  • Rimbaud

I guess we now know who still uses pencils. Good thing he wasn’t wielding a fountain pen!

  • nyc middle class

There are sooo many mentally ill people on the streets of New York ! Bloomberg’s city of the rich has not figured out how to get rid of them yet ! Wait until the weather starts getting warmer and they all start coming back from Florida where they spent the winter ! Horrible and dangerous.

  • Lieutenantdan

I would not think of confronting a homeless person or anyone else, they can be EDP, emotionally disturbed. What is wrong with her? She must have anger issues that she needs to address.

    • Brian The Homeless

some women would like to attack a confront a man just to fill the void in her life and making a statement. Hope to recovers and lesson learnt for her, smoking !! what a deal !!! get over it

Oh free the homless :o )
