Yankees' Girardi: Phil Hughes' Arm Looks 'Quicker' During Bullpen Session

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes felt good after throwing a 30-pitch bullpen session before Wednesday's game, his first time on the mound since going on the disabled list because of what the team called a "dead arm."

Hughes was put on the 15-day DL last Friday. He had been playing long toss but had not thrown off the mound since giving up five runs over 4 1-3 innings April 14 against Baltimore.

"I'm doing everything I can do," said Hughes. "It's really just one of those things where I need to do everything I can do to get my arm where it needs to be."

He's scheduled to throw another bullpen session Friday, and said he might rest between 15-pitch sets to simulate game conditions and see how his arm responds.

"He looked like his arm was a little quicker," manager Joe Girardi said. "He'll have tomorrow off, and then he'll get back to the long toss. He said he feels better."

There is no timetable for his return.

When will Hughes regain his velocity? Sound off in the comments below...
