Girardi: Phil Hughes Suffers 'Setback' In Bullpen Session

NEW YORK  (WFAN) - Yankees manager Joe Girardi told Yankees beat reporters that pitcher Phil Hughes has encountered a setback in a 20 pitch bullpen session Monday. Next up for Hughes is a visit with team doctors.

Giradi said that Hughes' arm didn't bounce back from his last session. He added "I don't feel so good about it now. I'm concerned."

Hughes, on the disabled list after a sharp decline in his velocity this spring continued into the regular season, had been tentatively scheduled for a minor league rehab start Thursday, but that's now unlikely.

"Not good," Girardi said. "It just didn't bounce back like we thought it would." Girardi also said it was like "there was nothing there." Hughes said he has no pain, just a lifeless feeling in the arm.

"It's just the same as before," Hughes said. "It's dead, nothing coming out. I didn't bounce back odd that long bullpen session like I would have liked. It's just a lot of deadness."

This setback likely ensures both Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia remain key to the Yankees' rotation, at least for now.
