Death Of Bin Laden

NEW YORK (WCBS 880/AP) — Sen. Charles Schumer is calling for better rail security now that the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound has turned up plans to attack trains in the U.S.

“Anyone, even a member of al-Qaida could purchase a train ticket and board an Amtrak train without so much as a question asked,” Schumer said. “So that’s why I’m calling for the creation of an Amtrak no ride list. That would take the secure flight program and apply it to Amtrak trains.”

LISTEN: WCBS 880′s Alex Silverman reports

Schumer said Sunday that he will push for the creation of a “do not ride” list for Amtrak. The list would be similar to the no-fly list that keeps those suspected of terrorism from flying into or out of the United States.

Notes and computer materials seized from bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan last Sunday showed bin Laden wanted to strike American cities again and discussed ways to attack trains.

Schumer is calling for increased funding for rail security in light of the new intelligence.

The New York Democrat says the U.S. must remain vigilant in protecting itself from future attacks.

How safe do you think the trains are right now? Tell us in our comments section below.

More scare tactics from our governement. Run sheep! Be scared! Give up your freedoms!

May 9, 2011 at 9:11 am

who Cares

This is not a scare tactic. Chuckie is a democrat. He cares about the little people
and want’s to keep us safe. It would only be a scare tactic if a republican said the same thing.

May 9, 2011 at 9:45 pm

vic

No, what Chuckie really wants is to create a whole lot more government wasteful spending that we can’t afford.

May 11, 2011 at 2:55 pm

J

The problem is so much bigger than just keeping terrorists off the trains. The threat against trains is that they can be attacked from both inside and outside the train. Schumer needs to think before he speaks.

May 9, 2011 at 9:09 am

nuisance

Maybe people should go about their lives and stop worrying about some mythical terrorist plot our government tells us about. You know it’s OK to question the government and not accept everything the spoon feed you.

May 9, 2011 at 9:13 am

peter cotton tail

Exactly it would be easier and more damaging just to derail it.

May 9, 2011 at 6:33 pm

BigLou15

Thinking before he spoke – that would be a novel idea for Schumer.

May 9, 2011 at 7:16 pm

Dotcommie

@J -
Good call. I was wondering who noticed that the reports said that the terrorists were planning to mess with the rails, not specifically hijacking trains. Besides, the threat won’t be nearly as serious until the government starts taxing cars by the mile, making train travel more cost-effective and (possibly) desirable.

DON’T BUY IT, THIS IS SO THEY CAN INSTITUTE THOSE MILLON DOLLAR RADIATION MACHINES INTO THE PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEM. THE MORE FEAR THEY PUT IN US THE RICHER THE CRONIES GET AND MORE OF ARE RIGHTS GET TAKEN AWAY, SO THAT THEY CAN TAKE MORE OF ARE MONEY AND DIGNITIES.

May 9, 2011 at 12:46 pm

jimmerz

Yeah, lets have a ‘No Ride’ policy in place for the train systems. And while you are at it, why not doe the same for buses and taxis, Then the government will be able to install the TSA at every train station, bus-stop and border crossing. That should make us all sleep better at night!, knowing we all have the same level of harrasment.

May 9, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Add sporting events and just about any other gathering. Put particular emphasis on political gatherings after all we want pictures of all thos subversives such as Tea Party people.
Indecently, Sect Napalotano has already targeted sports events on her list of to-dos.

May 9, 2011 at 4:20 pm

Don't tread on me

And don’t forget malls and grocery stores. And Wal Mart. We can’t be safe unless the TSA and the DHS touches everyone’s genitals daily. These people make me sick. The answer to 1984 is 1776.

May 9, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Ted

jimmerz. you missed one aspect. If your idea is implemented there would be no unemployment. We all would work for TSA

then they could claim they created all these new jobs

May 10, 2011 at 12:16 am

Sam

So everyone on the train will be screened, scanned, and identified so it’ll be easier to sort out the corpses after some psycho plants a bomb on the tracks. So what we’ll need to then is post guards every 50 feet on both sides of every mile of railroad in the US. Oops! We ran out of people!

May 9, 2011 at 9:00 am

RufusVonDufus

Who is going to guard the guards? And then, the guards guards!

May 9, 2011 at 10:58 am

Bob W

Yes, everyone on the train will be scanned “for their protection”, of course. Never mind the fact that a psycho can place a bomb on the tracks, as you say. Over time, everyone will have a face scan on file with the government. They can get them off of a driver’s license, passport or mandatory national ID card, when the card comes into being in the not too distant future. If they’re looking for someone in a crowd, they can find them efficiently. What a wondrous system we’re going to be living under. Kudos to George Orwell. He knew what happens when people let their guard down and trust the government to take care of them, as a shepard takes care of his sheep. The sheep are protected and become dependent. Later they’re fleeced regularly and finally slaughtered.

May 9, 2011 at 6:17 pm

Don't tread on me

The only psychos are the federal government thugs. Reichstag Fire, Tonkin Gulf attack, 9/11. Governments use fear to expand their power at the expense of the people.

May 9, 2011 at 6:40 pm

Don’t tread on me. unfortunately psychos are not only the federal government thugs. Look above. 24% of the article readers agree with Chuck you Schumer

May 9, 2011 at 8:54 am

Ken Hansen

This is amazing – apparently Sen. Schumer thinks this problem he imagines we have has a simple solution, well, let’s take a look at it:

1) Every Amtrak station I’m aware of is wide-open, no provisions for a secure area to board the trains – every Amtrak station will need a massive redesign to make them resemble airports with secure & insecure areas.

2) A passenger could no longer buy a last-minute ticket on the train because, well duh, they’d already be on the train.

3) To purchase a ticket would require the presentation of proper legal identification – what about the poor minorities that can’t afford proper identification, if it is a barrier to vote, it’s a barrier to ride the train, right?

4) Since we have identified trains as a possible terrorist target/tool, how long until you’ll have to submit to body scans, pat-downs, strict limitations on fluids, and of course, baggage inspection?

5) What about buses? Are they next?

6) Why only Amtrak? Why not all trains?

7) How, exactly, will making it harder to board a train encourage people to use their planned “high-speed trains”? It will be just as hard to get on a train as a plane, and in most cases the plane will be faster.

Obviously 4-7 are speculation on my part, but they are very, very reasonable next steps if his “plan” were to be implemented…

May 9, 2011 at 8:48 am

But think of all the jobs it would create!

May 9, 2011 at 8:54 am

great job ken!!!

8. Next; “do not walk” list, to protect our precious American sidewalks

May 9, 2011 at 9:10 am

Julie

“2) A passenger could no longer buy a last-minute ticket on the train because, well duh, they’d already be on the train.”

When was the last time you actually took a trip on a train? You do know that you can buy your ticket ON the train. There is an extra couple bucks fee for doing so, but you can buy a ticket on the train.

I do think you should add 8.) to your list, that being that every single member of Congress, including Chuckie Schumer, and ALL their family members must ALL used public transportation and go through THE SAME security checks they are asking the American people to go through. Same with health care and franking privileges, free parking, and all the other perks these shameless people grant themselves, gratis of the American taxpayer.

May 9, 2011 at 9:18 am

Beez

That was his point.

May 9, 2011 at 9:28 am

RufusVonDufus

Ken, this is a great idea no matter what!

3) To purchase a ticket would require the presentation of proper legal identification – what about the poor minorities that can’t afford proper identification, if it is a barrier to vote, it’s a barrier to ride the train, right?

No trains, no vote is perfect for the preservation of the U.S. End illegal immigration by sending all of them back to the PoO!

What’s next Chuck?
– Do Not Drive List?
– Do Not Bicycle List?
– Do Not Segway List?
– Do Not Walk List?

May 9, 2011 at 8:46 am

SamVaughn

exactly, Obama administration has proposed a national mileage tax. Pay by the mile tax on your car. When the technology is installaed they can monitor your every movement. Next step a “do not drive” list. Wait till you belong to the “wrong” political party and your opponent trumps up some “hate” speech charges and put’s yoiu on the “restricted party list” (RPL). Look it up. There is not due process to be put on this list, once accused, guilty or not, it’s almost impossible to get removed. People like Schumer have another agenda and it has nothing to do with our safety

May 9, 2011 at 9:36 am

And our borders are still wide open! What do you call someone that wants to take the Constitutional Rights and freedoms away from Americans? A terrorist? OK then Chuckie Wuckie and his cohorts, Lieberman,Graham, McCain, etc are domestic terrorists. The foreign terrorist may hate our Rights and freedoms but they are not the ones passing bills to take our Constitutional Rights, our politicians are. Superman deserted the American Way and so have most of our politicians. They are traitors and should be treated as such.We still have the power of the vote. Vote for Ron Paul in 2012 and vote out these traitorous politicians.

It’s a moot point chuckie.

Unfortunately I had to when I refused a TSA screening at the Atlanta airport. They sent me to the curb after hearing a lecture on the 4th amendment. I had to take Amtrak home. I’m glad they hadn’t implemented this latest act of war on our freedoms at that time.

May 9, 2011 at 6:43 pm

Tell Me: WHY do You New Yorkers Keep Re-Electing THIS Guy???

May 9, 2011 at 8:30 am

Ken Hansen

Because he’s looking out for the little guy – I vividly remember when then-Rep. Schumer held a press conference and shaking a box of wheaties asked “Why does this box of Wheaties cost 5x what a BUSHEL of wheat costs?”

His feigned ignorance on subjects like that and the famous “Why are banks charging you to access your own money?” issue appeals to superficial voters who rarely question the soundbite.

They say the most dangerous place in Washington is the space between Sen. Schumer and a microphone (Of course, POTUS has changed that to the space between a tamali and his wife.)…

May 9, 2011 at 8:52 am

I gave up my Freedom for cheaper Wheaties. Sounds about right for the typical doofus Dem voter.

May 9, 2011 at 9:54 am

New Yorkers keep reelecting this guy because they are reflexive Democrat party members. they think that liberal Democrats are the politicians that really care about the average men.
News flash: The only thing politicians care about is getting reelected.

New Yorkers won’t wake up until it’s too late.

Fake terror, yet another violation of our rights. Add it to the list of gov’t violations of our right:
They violate the 1st Amendment by placing protesters in cages, banning books like “America Deceived II” and censoring the internet.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns.
They violate the 4th and 5th Amendment by molesting airline passengers.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting undeclared wars for foreign countries.
Impeach Obama and sweep out the Congress.

Yup. Then outlaw “special interest” influence, fire the Judiciary, end the Fed. World court held for perps of crimes against humanity and our planet. It’s a pipe dream though. With several generations of social engineering plus tech to make the worst tyrants in history blush? Fact is, folk will cheer the demise of their “Republic” and everything it stands for, on primetime t.v. Get the bad guy/cop shows. “CATCH THE TERRORIST!! ” shows. It’s like we’re living in a sick, REALLY sick sci-fi thriller. That never ends. All I’ve got to say is, GOOD LUCK all. But survival is gonna take more than Hope. That’s for sure.

May 9, 2011 at 12:24 pm

Publius Two PointZero

You do realize that you don’t have to be ON the train to blow it up or derail it?

May 9, 2011 at 8:26 am

Concerned

Terrorists would certainly gain by destroying train stations and killing people, but what about the infrastructure in the tracks, bridges, and tunnels? Destroy or cripple the infrastructure, and you cripple the ability to conduct commerce. If you think the cost of goods are high now, just wait until rail systems are damaged.

May 9, 2011 at 8:25 am

Bob W

The infrastructure will collapse on its own for lack of maintenance (e.g., Mississippi River levees) as we chase bogeymen all over the world and here at home. Notice how we always have money for fighting several wars concurrently and national security. But, dang it, we just can’t afford to close that border with Mexico. Sad that our elected geniuses don’t see a connection between open borders — during our wars on drugs and terrorism — and national security.

May 9, 2011 at 6:27 pm

FEAR, let’s keep the American’s in fear, this way, we will give up all our liberties for some safety. Keep terrorism alive and well, fuel the military industrial complex, let sanity take a walk, and keep invading other countries…this is America’s motto.

Haha…I knew it would only take a short time once they “released” the warning that Bin baby was going to target trains. Ole Janet’s been wanting to have her TSA’s protecting us and expanding the union for a long time. I’m hoping she can find something that also shows Bin was going after FOX news cause then she’d have the reason to shut them down to protect them. If all of us just stopped living our life and instead accept being felt up in the guise of security the world would be a safer place……and unfreaking boring place to be.

May 9, 2011 at 8:19 am

Joan

Why don’t we just get the TSA to grope us not only at airports and train stations but at shopping malls, sports arenas, and walking around town – perhaps a check point at every street corner would be perfect. Show your ID to make sure you’re not the “do not walk about freely” list. Some of you idiots above deserve to go live in some commie country.

“Jew hater”? Nah! Hate Israeli Zionist policy of hubris, domination and expansion? You bet!

“God hater”? I can’t hate what doesn’t exist. Al Qaeda, Zionists, the religious right, any group that wishes to impose their sacrosanct way of life on the rest of us? Yeah!

So you’re one of the Native Ams? 1000 years advantage did zilch for you. You hate everyone who ‘invaded’ you, regardless of race and creed, and blame the white man for everything, you wallow in the “pity me, I’ve been unjustly treated.” Get over it!

Do enough people ride Amtrak to require a “do not ride list”? A better solution would be to limit Amtrak to profitable routes, only. And the number of profitable routes is 2. It would be very easy to police 2 routes. And if they became unprofitable, end them, too.

May 9, 2011 at 8:02 am

Coming from someone who rides trains on a regular basis, I have always been astounded at the lack of security. And as for whoever said “what are they gonna do, drive the train into a building?” … Are you ignorant? A bomb in a train station could take out hundreds of people. So I agree that we at least need metal detectors, a no-ride list and x-ray machines for baggage. Trains have NO security.

May 9, 2011 at 7:55 am

richard

OK so how much of a delay will you accept? one hour on each end? BTW: I’m former military, former NW pilot and security is BS at Boston and Orlando, I can show you (I won’t) how to get on a plane with anything you want any time you want. Hint: the service people do not go through that screening you see at the front door…..there is a back door.

Where does this stop. A tractor trailer could be easily filled with 40 tons of Timothy McVie gas anfertilizerer, look what a van size bomb did, now think what 10 times thaamountnd would do in down town NYC! So what now search every big truck on the road in every city? Heck a person with a 30 pound bomb in a shopping cart could take out an entire Walmart. So where do you stop?

May 9, 2011 at 8:17 am

decora

i had no idea that shopping carts were so dangerous! clearly, we need to ban them.

May 9, 2011 at 9:15 am

Tim M

If you want to do damage to a train, you don’t even need a bomb. Just damage the tracks and the train will derail. Money spent on security in train stations would be money squandered on the national security gravy train.

If you don’t want to take a chance on being hurt by a terrorist, stay home! Your chances of dying by car accident are so much greater.

May 9, 2011 at 8:20 am

The chances of being hurt by idiot politicians like up-Chuck is our most dangerous daily risk.

We need a No Politician List!

May 9, 2011 at 9:14 am

And I think the you and your entire family should have to be patted down by perverts dressed in official uniforms every single time you use public transportation and even your own vehicle. In fact all of you should be patted down and searched before walking out of your house..

Pat Medown

You volunteering Julie?

May 9, 2011 at 2:01 pm

RPM

A “don’t get on the train” list isn’t going to keep a bomb out of a terminal (and it probably wouldn’t keep it off the train, either) The train itself isn’t a worthwhile target, especially compared to many others that are available.

May 9, 2011 at 9:44 am

mqg25

A better suggestion would be that we would need very little security at airports and train stations if this country’s foreign policy of “Pax Romana” would change and we start minding our own business by getting the hell out of the Middle East.

Unfortunately, the Republicans have backlogged the National Security database while they check to make sure that none of the 9/11 First Responders are on the terrorist watch list … GOP = The brilliance of CEO’s … LOL

What a great idea! ID check everyone who wants to use trains, bridges, tunnels and then everyone will be waiting in lines for hours or days, NY will shut down, noone can work, tax money will stop feeding the politicians so they will impose a new tax on waiting in lines, but since noone can get to work to pay them the politicians will go back to mugging people on the street. I wonder where Schumer lives, it can’t be NY or he would realize the city could not function if everyone were ID checked on trains etc. Just another stupid tax , spend, and pander Democrat.

The problem with using the “terror watch list” is that the list has NOTHING to do with terrorism. It’s mostly little old ladies and 6-month-old infants and U.S. Senators and anybody who ever disagreed with George Bush.

I took amtrak to dc rt a cpl wks ago. There is absolutely no security whatsoever on the trains. Its only a matter of time…

It’s only a matter of time? What, that the government run a false flag event?

The government is being watched like a crack head standing in line at a pharmacy.

We are all watching …

DOUBLE WOOF to you too.

@ Fanny Forbes Franklen

One of my absolute favourite writers. I highly recommend “H.L. Mancken on Religion” – Prometheus Books

“A Dog is very religious and its religion is free from superstition. The god it believes in is its master, and that god actually exists, and is actually concerned about its welfare, and actually rewards it and punishes it, on a plan comprehensible to Dogs and meeting with their approval, for its virtues and vices. Dogs need not waste any time over insoluble theological problems. Their god is plainly visible and wholly understandable — they have no need of clergy to guess for them, mislead them and get them into trouble.” ~ H.L. Mencken

CHUCK IS RIGHT
WE NEED A DO NOT RIDE LIST
GIVE CHUCK CREDIT
HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE
WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THIS.
MAYBE TRUMP COULD MAKE
CHUCK HIS VICE PRESIDENT.

lol @ how many other people would have thought of this…
Schumer isn’t the first person to suggest this but the media sure is going to give him credit after UBL’s expanded terror plots have come to light.

Those who had suggested we secure trains and buses during the past 10+ years weren’t taken seriously because EVERYONE believed that air travel was the main focus of the terrorists. But per usual, there is this a rush to the camera to score political points.

I’m confused. so people that are on the list because of some BS like they write harshly to the TSA should not be able to own guns?

Chuckie, your recommendatio is impractical!! improving security on the trains by adding surviellence cameras, security personnel to inspect trians randomly, install audio/video systems to encourage public awareness of violence and to report any illegal activities and at the same time, the system should be informative of what the Amtrack is doing to improve such security. Do Not Ride recommendation can create legal issue relates to discrimination and law sues. Chuckie, wake up and smell the coffee! come up with better ideas or retire>

Use the same freaking list they use for airlines, the system is already in place. But, I am betting that the US Goverment will spend millions to replicate the same system, because they are not smart!

You might want to do some reading. The only people who wear turbans in the US are Sikhs who have been fighting fundamentalist Islam for 500 years. Too much FOX/CNN has deprived America of common sense and intelligence.

Kanwarjeet,

I wasn’t speaking of Sikhs, but of the people who have actual towels on their heads, like when they’re fresh out of the shower: it sickens me to see this.

This man will do anything to grab a headline. Why doesn’t someone shut his trap, chop off his index finger and push his ‘spectacles’ up that greasy nose.

BTW, I’m NOT a Republican, NOT a conservative, NOT a Tea partier, NOT a liberal, NOT a Democrat. I do find this man, his face, and his politics and politicking a real nuisance.

Worse than Lieberman!
