Brooklyn Borough President ‘Furious’ With Possible Closure Of Eight Fire Companies

BROOKLYN, NY (WCBS 880) – It looks like Brooklyn has the biggest share of fire house closings due to New York City budget cuts and the outspoken borough president isn’t happy about the news.

Eight of the 20 fire houses on the possible closure list are from Brooklyn, that’s 40 percent of Brooklyn’s stations.

Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz is furious and outraged that any fire companies are on the hit list.

“Of the 20 that they’re proposing closure, eight of them are in Brooklyn and guess what, we will not take it on the chin, no way, no how,” he said.

Markowitz says the fire commissioner has told the city council that if the closures occur, response time will be delayed.

“You know what that means? The possibility of greater casualties and loss of life and we will not accept it,” said Markowitz.

The proposed fire houses on the chopping block in Brooklyn are Engines 205, 206, 218, 220, 233, 284 and Ladders 104 and 161.

Also on the FDNY’s draft list of endangered fire companies are four in Queens, three each in Manhattan and the Bronx and two on Staten Island.

Cut the funding to the bike lanes (over $100 million) and the new “Digital Consultant, another $40 million, not to mention that all Christine Quinn does at these press conferences is nod her head in agreement with the mayor’s idiot reasoning..she’s like a nodding bobblehead…

WHAT PART OF NUMBER ONE TERRORIST TARGET DON’T THEY GET?

    GOD BLESS FDNY🙂

  3. Gloria Guerriera says:

Bloomberg is playing the game again.Threatening to cut essenatal services like fire house, getting people up in arms so that they would be more receptive to tax increases rather than lose fire protection. With all the money spent he can not find money being spent foolishly or fraudulenty to tap into. Besides he has no great love for the FDNY, considering them racist for not having enough minorities in their ranks. This is the man who said this city needed him for another term to straighten things out. Only he can save this city.

Fire Stations should never be closed, they shouldn’t even be thought of when it comes to budget cuts, why don’t they cut politicians pay checks, or cut their positions, bet they wouldn’t like that. lives will be lost but than again they don’t care about that. this is wrong and unacceptable.

    That’s 20 TOO many!
