SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (WCBS 880) - It is a modern day university nightmare - a gunman on campus.

WCBS 880's Peter Haskell: The Drill Will Be Contained To The Campus

Ever since the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, schools have had to prepare for this type of situation.

That's why Seton Hall University will be holding an active shooter drill today.

"Active shooter situations are very rare. I mean, they're very well publicized, but they don't happen very often. But it's something that, if it does happen, has a major impact on any community," says Thomas Giordano, assistant director of emergency management at Seton Hall.

He says local police and fire departments, along with Essex County officials, will work with the university on the drill.

"The more often we... exercise ourselves, the easier it's going to be if something should happen," Giordano told WCBS 880 reporter Peter Haskell.

So, when you see a lot of emergency personnel on campus today, don't be alarmed. It's just a drill.
