NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A new online map will show solar energy potential for every building in New York City will make its debut next week.
City University of New York researchers flew planes in a grid pattern over the five boroughs. Lasers charted 15 billion points, creating a 3-D map of the city’s one million buildings.
“We’re able to determine even the shadowing that a building or a tree might put on a building or on the ground so that we can now determine how much solar can generated from that particular location,” said CUNY Director of Sustainability Tria Case.

Once nycsolarmap.org is up and running, you’ll be able to enter your address and find out how much solar energy your roof could capture and how long it would take to see an economic benefit.
At present, 400 structures in New York City have solar panels.
