Stories Of Fatherhood: 1010 WINS's Glenn Schuck

1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reflects on fatherhood and the birth of his daughter, Eva.

This year will be my fifth Father's Day. My daughter, Eva Noelle, was born just before Christmas in 2007. I am a relatively "older" first-time Dad. In my 20s and 30s, so many of my friends had children and explained the joy of being a parent to me. I never could have imagined that joy until I actually did experience it.

As a reporter, I am lucky enough to be a witness to history every single day. Many stories can be heartbreaking: I saw an entire family perish in a fire, lived the horrors of September 11 and experienced gun violence that is still ruining families every day.

I have also witnessed the Yankees winning a World Series title, got within a few feet of the Pope when he was in New York City and watched the excitement of a New York City Marathon.

My absolute favorite thing to do in my job is "man on the street" reports. I love getting reaction to stories—and New Yorkers are so great at reacting.

On the day of my daughter Eva's birth at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J., I remember thinking that I just couldn't wait to see my daughter's face for the first time. I was in the operating room, sitting beside my wife, Jen, as she delivered our little girl. Within minutes of the birth, the nurses placed Eva on a table and I walked a few feet, put out my index finger, and Eva grabbed it.

It was at that moment that I was thinking, if a reporter asked me for MY reaction, I would have been unable to respond. There were so many things I was thinking of at that moment, if a reporter asked ME for my reaction, I would have just been in a blank stare of happiness and amazement.

My daughter Eva has made my daily work that much more enjoyable. After 30 years in radio, there is no "man on the street" reaction I enjoy more than my own. Every time I hear Eva call me "Daddy" ... I am speechless.
