UConn President Hoping Calhoun Stays As Coach
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — The University of Connecticut's new president says she hopes Jim Calhoun stays on as men's basketball coach, but recognizes it's a personal decision he will be making with his family.
Susan Herbst said Tuesday she has told the 69-year-old Hall of Famer that she loves having him in the job, and that his achievements as a coach and philanthropist inspire the UConn community.
But like others, she awaits Calhoun's decision on whether he will retire or return for a 26th season at UConn this fall.
Calhoun led the Huskies in April to a third national championship.
He says he is not setting a deadline for himself to decide on whether to retire, and probably will not make up his mind until after a family vacation this month in the Caribbean.
