Family Of NJ Girl Who Died On Wildwood Ferris Wheel Sues

WILDWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The parents of an 11-year-old girl who fell to her death from near the top of a Jersey shore Ferris wheel are suing the ride's operator.

Twanda and Byron Jones filed suit Thursday in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court against Morey's Pier.

Their daughter, 11-year-old Abiah Jones, was on the ride at Mariner's Landing at Morey's Piers in Wildwood on June 3 when she fell more than 100 feet to her death.

The exact cause of the incident still hasn't been determined. Abiah was at the amusement park for a school trip.

A lawyer for the family says the Pleasantville, NJ couple is suing in Pennsylvania because Morey's Pier does extensive marketing there. The suit does not ask for specific damages.

A Morey's spokeswoman says the company won't comment.

In June, the amusement park accepted state Community Affairs Department recommendations that there be a minimum of two passengers per car.

It is also raising the minimum height requirement from 54 inches to 60 inches.
