World Trade Center Cross Moved To Permanent Home

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A Ground Zero icon has been moved to a permanent new home.

A flatbed truck moved the World Trade Center cross from its previous location next to St. Peter’s Church to the National September 11th Memorial and Museum.

A construction worker discovered the 20-foot tall cross standing upright in the rubble of the Twin Towers. During the emotional clean up at Ground Zero, the cross became the symbol of solace and peace.

“It’s going to be another step forward in bringing in these large-scale artifacts that will tell the story of what happened,” said museum president Joe Daniels.

The cross was blessed during a ceremony by the Rev. Brian Jordan before being moved. Jordan also blessed the beams in the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

About 200 emergency workers and families of the victims attended the blessing ceremony at Zucotti Park in lower Manhattan.

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani attended and said the city is stronger today.

no one is saying that those other religions couldn’t come up with their own memorial for ground zero. I thought freedom of religion was about allowing people to practice and hold their faith, not about trying to eradicate anything from our society that could hold meaning for people of faith.

If you think this was some miracle formation from God, you got to look into things more before jumping to conclusions. The World Trade Center was made with “t” beams. So when it collapses it’s naturally going to make a cross shape. That means this was a formation made from just the laws of physics.

I dont get it??? We can tell other religions they cannot have Churches or statues but they can put up a cheap, cold and uninviting version of the cross. To begin with Jesus was hung from a TREE…not a cross, So who is this CROSS really FOR??? Many of the people who died were not Christians, so i think we need to RESPECT all of them!!!

You are so wrong. Jesus, according to the Holy Bible, was hung from a cross made from a tree. The cross to Jesus was also cheap, cold, and uninviting. The person who died on Jesus left, also hung from a cross, was a robber then became born again just before dying. The hope of the cross is to signify that Jesus rose from the dead thus giving all man kind hope. Easter Sunday

How WHOLLY inappropriate and disgusting. For one organized religion to come and “mark it’s territory” on consecrated grounds where so many people from different religions and beliefs died is beyond obscene. The complete disrespect for others is amazing to me and I find it deeply troubling, especially for a city like New York. I’m so upset by this I can’t even begin to describe it. I refuse to visit the memorial as long as that stands there. So, so, so, so disgusting! May efforts to topple it succeed, either legal or physically.

Let an image of reconciliation stand. Let those who seek peace, those who take comfort, and those that offer forgiveness through what the cross represents continue their work. The cross represents all these things.

If other people with other worldviews want to add to the memorial representing their faith in appropriate ways, let them.

bc more people than firefighters died that day, and the cross was a symbol of hope for many, including firefighters.

what does hope have to do with the cross?? Where was christ the day the towers were hit??? Maybe watching over the priest’s molesting little boys!!!

Jesus Christ lives in His children. That is all. As far as where was He on 9/11? Well all you atheists have been telling God to get out of our schools, governments and country for decades now….Maybe He has answered your wishes. YOU TOLD HIM TO LEAVE!! So don’t be confused if He has left protecting this country…fool.

You would know the Catholic church would squeeze into this somehow.
Rudy Tootie in that photo is a joke also ,a phony hero. The victims of
9-11 deserve more than this cheap PR stunt.

  • Mr happy

How could the fdny allow a non firefighter memorial to be put a ground zero?
