Poll: Derek Jeter Ties Babe Ruth As Greatest All-Time Yankee

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Derek Jeter has tied Babe Ruth as the greatest Yankee of all time among New York City baseball fans.

For that, No. 2 can thank the female fan for voting for him in droves.

The Captain and the Babe tied at 23 percent in a Quinnipiac University poll of 785 baseball fans. The poll was taken July 19-25, about two weeks after Jeter homered for his 3,000th hit.

This is just the latest coup in the polls for Jeter. He was named New York’s all-time favorite athlete this March in a  Siena College poll.

The poll questioned 785 New Yorkers interested in baseball. Thirty percent of women picked Jeter, followed by Ruth at 16 percent. Men went for Ruth, 29 percent to 18 percent.

Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle finished third, fourth and fifth overall, although Alex Rodriguez finished fourth among women. Fans over 65 favored DiMaggio.

The margin of error for the greatest-Yankee question was 3.5 percentage points.

Get over it, the people have spoken and have been heard! Jeter and Babe tied for BEST Yankees ever, period.

Now go run and tell momma.

Why do some Yankee fans get so angry if someone says anything negative about Jeter? Jeter is not a god.

    What a joke……Maybe top 10…….Maybe!!!!!

Better than DiMaggio? Mantle? Lou G? Berra? Just to name a few. I honestly think we are reaching now. It’s this generations response to not actually seeing these men play. Joe D hit 361 homers and struck out 369 career, can’t get better than that. These days guys are stricking out 369 times in a year. He’s a great player but the greatest? NO.

  • Pie

Once again Yankee fans show how ignorant they are. Greater than Gehrig,, DiMaggio, Mantle, Berra? Get real!

  • Scott

The average person interested in baseball could not possibly have the expertise or knowledge of the game from a player perspective, to even come close to make a poll such as this make sense. I wonder if 785 baseball experts would rank Jeter along side Mr. Ruth? Now that would be more meaningful. Nonetheless, no matter where Jeter ranks, he is in fact great. And very few are in that league no matter what the ranking is.

  • Bruce

Embarrasing to report this. Greatest since Ruth? Really? Also, 785 people? That is not many. People “interested in baseball?” So is my mother. That does not mean she knows baseball history and can answer this question. What is the point of these polls anyway?

  • EddieK

With all respect to Jeter, who certainly is a great Yankee, All this poll proves is that people have no concept of baseball history.
