Gary Carter’s Tumors Are ‘80 Percent Better,’ Reports Daughter Of Ex-Mets Star

NEW YORK (WFAN) — Gary Carter’s daughter had good news to report on Tuesday.

Carter, the former Mets fan favorite and Hall of Famer, has been battling inoperable brain cancer with chemotherapy and radiation since his diagnosis in May. Now, Kimmy Bloemers says the tumors are “80 percent better.”

“The most important fact is the tumors are starting to go away,” Bloemers wrote to the Carter family website, according to the New York Daily News.

Carter announced on May 21 that an MRI revealed four “small” tumors on his brain.

After reviewing Carter’s latest MRI results, doctors at the Duke Medical Center said “there is much less swelling” and that the tumors are “less angry” and “a little less dense,” according to Bloemers.

“Kid” is best known in New York for helping the Mets win the 1986 World Series. He drove in 11 postseason runs that year, after posting 24 homers and 105 RBI during the season.

“He said he didn’t want to make the last out in the sixth game of the ’86 World Series,” former teammate Ron Darling said after he learned of the diagnosis in May. “That says a lot about what kind of person he is, and how he’s going to fight this.”
