Suffolk County Legislator Wants Fees For Paper, Plastic Bags At Grocery Stores

HAUPPAUGE, NY (WCBS 880) – If you are going to put your groceries in a paper or plastic bag, one legislator wants to put a 5-cent charge on every bag you use.

Suffolk County Leglislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher says it will help save the environment and encourage people to use reusable bags.

Adrienne Esposito, an environmentalist with the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, says Washington, DC implemented a similar law nearly two years ago and there was a 75 percent drop in bag use at stores.

“Americans use over 100 billion plastic bags and only 6 percent of those end up recycled,” she tells WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall. “A nickel fee placed on plastic bags has been shown, throughout the nation and other countries, to dramatically reduce plastic bag use by 70 to 80 percent.”

Viloria-Fisher says her fellow legislators have been supportive, but she has received opposition from some state representatives who told her the bag pricing is like a tax.

What do you think? Think a fee will encourage people to use their own bags? Let us know below

It is a shame that so many of the comments lacked civility. This is what is reflected in the media and the disfunction in Washington. It would be much more productive to have a rational discussion without name calling.
The litter and destruction caused by plastic bags costs money and environmental degradation. Reducing the number of bags used will help save both in the long run. Remember that you would choose to pay a nickel only for the bags that you choose to take at the check out.

Tax, Tax and more Taxes that’s all that liberals like Viloria-Fisher know. Since, she is up for re-election to the Suffolk County Legislature this November, there is a simple way to deal with her. DON’T VOTE FOR HER AND BOOT HER OUT OF OFFICE.

Jerks like this should be removed from office immediately. This lady could care less about the enviroment, the only GREEN she sees is the cash from the bag sales.

Suffolk County Leglislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher needs to see a shrink. QUICKLY !

Fee is just another word for TAX. Maybe we should have an political stupid idea fee, then we could ballance the budget.

  • lmm

i really wish these damn politicians would keep their hands out of our wallets!!!! DAMN DISGRACE!!!

  • Guy

it’s all about saving energy and thereby creating a cleaner planet with less pollution. Make it 10cents a bag if that will help clean up the mess we’ve created and besides It’s not really a tax you have to pay if you reuse the same cloth bag each time. Seen the Hudson river lately? It’s time we stated thinking about others rather than our own selfish interests.

    • Viloria-Fisher bumped her head

So who will buy us the recycle bags do we get a free supply. We shop in a store what are we supposed to do carry 100 items one by one dumb idea from a very dum woman Viloria-Fisher stop trying to make people in your district get poorer lets see if you win election next time you poser.

  • Old Man

What a CROCK! If you folkks up there allow that TAX to be implemented you are absolutely NUTS!!! It is NO SECRET there is a MASS EXODUS out of NY!!! Ever wonder WHY!!??

  • Aquila729

I am tired of these wackos which come up with these ideas. Suffolk and Nassau are already two of the most expensive counties in the U.S. to live in. Why do we need another “hidden tax”? We are already experiencing a great exodus of young families out of this state and especially this area. Maybe Esposito can do us a favor and go with them!

  • soccermama

This is an ill advised tax that will target mostly families who are already stretched to the breaking point. My weekly groceries (no, I don’t want to go the supermarket every day, thank you!) do not fit in my shopping tote. Nitwit.

  • Christopher Beattie

But without those paper bags how are we going to bundle our newspapers for recycling?

  • J9

Who will end up with this money? Not the taxpayers ! It already costs too much to feed our families. Go back to San Francisco or Mars or what ever fantasy land you live in and STFU!!!

  • Jim D

Enough already with this “nanny state” legislation. I am sick of government telling everyone what to do and charging fees! I live in Suffolk County but not in her district, thank god. But for anyone that does live in her district, please, PLEASE, make sure this person is not re-elected.

  • JGNY

Yes, create another useless tax to empower govt, in the process, destroy Jobs by taxing the activity so no one takes the bags and there will be no need to make them. HOW DUMB are these people? Didn’t they learn with the cigarette tax that more taxes is less sales. Jerks like this should be removed from office immediately. This lady could care less about the enviroment, the only GREEN she sees is the cash from the bag sales. DOPE

  • Sick of Non-Sense

It figures, why not charge us to breathe while you’re at it……..stop with a fee for everything!!
