NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The television business in New York is booming with a record-breaking 23 series being filmed in the city this season.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was all smiles, speaking from the Steiner Studios in Brooklyn, and called the number "pretty incredible" considering the difficult state of the economy.

"During a time of financial distress, more T.V. shows are shooting in our city than ever before. So when you start reading stories about people leaving the city or about it being tough to do business here, nothing's perfect, but the evidence is that we have to be doing something right," Bloomberg told reporters, including 1010 WINS' Stan Brooks.

According to Bloomberg, the film and television production in the city is a $5 billion industry that supports over 100,000 jobs and generates revenue for some 4,000 businesses.

Borough President Marty Markowitz also lauded the city's achievement and even got in a little plug for his beloved Brooklyn.

"I know you've heard, it's said that Brooklyn is 'Hollywood East,' but the way I think things are going, I think it's more accurate to say that Hollywood is 'Brooklyn West.'"
