S.I. Congressman Wants WTC Steel Cross To Be National Monument

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A Staten Island congressman has proposed legislation that would make the Sept. 11 cross-shaped steel beam a national monument.

Rep. Michael Grimm said he was pushing for protective status for the 20-foot steel cross that was found amid the ruins of the World Trade Center site.

“The focus and goal of my legislation will be to make the cross a national monument. Therefore, once and for all, putting an end to whether the cross should be part of 9/11, whether it shouldn’t,” Grimm told 1010 WINS.

The proposed legislation was in response to a lawsuit filed by the American Atheists, according to Grimm. The group argues that a “Christian icon” should not be included in the 9/11 memorial museum, slated to open next year.

Grimm called the group’s opposition reprehensible and said the cross was “so much more than a symbol of Christianity.”

“It is part of the story of what everyone went through during 9/11,” he said.

The congressman from New York’s 13th congressional district, said that the iron beams need to be memorialized because they “were a symbol of hope and comfort for so many enduring such a horrific time in our history.”

I believe there is only one God who watches over all of us, no matter what your religions or belief is. God Created all and has given others the right to pray any religion, in the end we are either 6 ft under or ashes in an urn… isn’t considered a memorial site any way.

1 – Free to believe, not to IMPOSE, and display your idiocies.

2 – You mean like evangelical megachurches; like the Vatican, like bloodsucking, welfare wringing orthodox Jews; exploitative Islamist jihadists; like mendicant Hindus and Buddhist monks living off public charity and exploited children; like all tax exempt religious organizations and institutions — please tell me how? Pray tell, show me the way!

I wished! Not to say there are no well-to-do atheists, like Bill and Melinda Gates who give away billions to worthwhile causes without any expectation of returns.

Your piety is only surpassed by your ignorance.

Do you really think it a coincidence that a cross of steel was found in the tons of debris from the Towers – not a Jewish star or crescent moon! Without the grace of God thousands more could have been lost that day. This country needs to repent its “good without God” attitude unless it really does want to see how “good” life is without God & the saving grace of the cross. YES, this cross should be part of the Memorial – either in the museum or on the site – as much as the surviving tridents or the survivor tree do.

    1. Rodin says:

Interpretation is in those who wish it. There is nothing ‘miraculous’ in crossed steel beams found in the wreckage of a steel construction except for fools who want to imbue it with transcendental symbolism.

How many crossed beams in any ordinary demolition?

KEEDP YOUR FAITH (and superstitions) OUT OF MY FACE!

Yes it should be, With a Flag standing right beside it. “Under God”….

Nothing but more pandering to the religious wrong. “…so much more than a symbol of Christianity”? A smokescreen to further enshrine the Christian sharia.

“When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.”

    . . . a GRIMM prediction.

No place for any religion in this memorial, religion is what got us in this mess in the first place

  7. Jim says:

Leave religion out of it scap the steel beams.

  8. The Facts says:

Seems like political pandering to the base. The terrorists attacked all Americans without caring about religion or anything else.

  9. Stan R says:

Make it a monument but turn it o it’s side.

  10. Ben says:

I agree with Marc. The attackers made it about religion which destroyed so many people’s lives, so let’s not make the site or anything on it about religion. People of all religions including atheists died on 9/11. I am against the bill to make the cross a national monument.

  11. susan says:

yes..the beams should be considered a national monument..just because it is in the shape of a cross doesnt make it necessarily a “religious” symbol..believer or not in christianity or religion at all, that piece of our history did survive and should be at the memorial site, just as we have the ww2 memorial in pearl harbor, or the vietnam war memoiral wall in washington, or any other reminder of our past the we should heed..

    1. KPMc says:

Then why that piece of steel… why not one of the hundreds of other twisted pieces of wreckage

Because they are not shaped like the symbol of your religion.

Please stop trying to justify your nonsense with lies.

  12. Marc says:

And if the steel was shaped as a Jewish Star, I suppose the good congressman would be pushing for the same legislation.

    1. ejones says:

More importantly, if it were shaped like a crescent moon…
