NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A Brooklyn boy is being lauded as a hero after coming to his mother’s rescue Wednesday morning with a life-saving phone call to authorities.

Drew Champagnie, a third grader at P.S. 13, was getting ready for school shortly after 8 a.m. when his mother, Donna Gilkes, began having a seizure at their Hendrix Street home in East New York.

The boy quickly sprang into action. He immediately called 911 and told the operator his mother was “shaking,” 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria reported.

Police said the operator kept the child on the phone until an ambulance arrived.

The woman, who was lying on the floor unconscious when EMS arrived on the scene, was taken to Kings County Hospital for treatment. She is listed in stable condition.

Neighbors said they’re not surprised the boy did the right thing.

“[He’s] a very quiet, low-key kid, not your average run-around-the-block kid,” Stephanie Pearson said. “He doesn’t talk much outside but evidently he was talkative enough to save his mom’s life.”

Drew is expected to be honored by the FDNY Thursday morning at fire headquarters in the MetroTech building in downtown Brooklyn.

    Well done Drew…Bravo!

Anyone at 7 years of age should pretty much be cognizant of such things. If not, there’s a learning disability somewhere. I just don’t like these racist media libs in NY playing it up like they don’t expect “someone like him” to know what to do.

Oh, and I do think that he is a hero for saving a life.

Great job! I think all children that age should know what to do. I know mine would.
