NJ Man Files Lawsuit Over Port Authority Toll Hikes

NEW MILFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A New Jersey man has filed a federal lawsuit in New York over the Port Authority’s toll increase.

Yoel Weisshaus of New Milford claims the increase is an abuse of power and discriminates against him because he is poor.

Cash tolls on the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing went up from $8 to $12 on Sunday.

Weisshaus claims the tolls are targeted to restrict minimum-wage earners and will be used to complete the World Trade Center project instead of improving bridges and tunnels.

The Record newspaper reports the unemployed Bergen Community College student, who frequently visits his grandparents in Brooklyn, has asked the court to waive filing fees because he can’t afford them. He is representing himself.

What do you think are the merits of this lawsuit? Sound off in our comments section below…

I totally agree this lawsuit, in fact I am looking into suing the PA now as well. They PA is stealing from us, it is theft. Also, the lawyer is right, why aren’t they covering this with the insurance money they had gotten? I am going to sue the PA. Also nobody is talking about these BIG FAT pensions they pay their employees…. Ummmm they must cut out the pensions totally!!!

  2. Ivan says:

I wrote a letter to the port authority telling them that their management team is clueless or just didn’t care about the current state of this nation. They should be ashamed of themselves, I work the night shift and the only way into the city is to drive. If this lawsuit goes on favor of the commuters, I would like to know how they will have to pay back everyone that paid in cash, hold on to your receipts!!! THIS NATION IS GOING DOWN FAST, WE HAVE GOOD PEOPLE ARE DYING EVERYDAY IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE AND HONOR. THE FUNNY PART IS THAT THE PEOPLE RUNNING THIS COUNTRY DON’T BELIEVE IT DOES THINGS; WE NEED TO REBEL EVERY NOW AND THEN, LIKE THOMAS JEFFERSON MENTIONED!!!

CBS YOU OF ALL PEOPLE I NEVER THOUGHT WOULD CENSOR VIEWERS COMMENTS YOU`VE LOST ME AND MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS AS LISTENERS AND READERS OF YOUR NEWS I HOPE MANY PEOPLE FOLLW. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!

    1. Poor Censorship says:

CBS is lousy at censorship. They seem to miss spam and delete people’s opinion even if they may be offensive. Isn’t that the point of comments to see the strong points of both side. Some idiot biased moderator thinks he has the right to silence some voice and not others. I hope CBS mgmt wake up and fire this idiot or move him to another post.

  8. Dik Itchi says:

There should be two types of toll collection lanes: “Poor” and “Don’t Care”. Show your food stamp card; Medicaid card; 8 father-less children in car and pay $1. Others pay $12. Welfare fraud investigation personnel should also attend the “Poor” toll booth and verify the type of car a welfare recipient is driving and check for ownership, usage, etc…..

can i join in on the suit, i am going to need a second job to pay to get to work. i agree with a comment posted, we all need to stand up together and fight and not use them, for a few days. but that will never happen. and the reason behind the hike i am not for sorry i lost people on 911 as well but they should be getting that money from people, companies who want to invest not us hard working tax payers who live pay check to pay check to pay bills and support our family

    1. Cat Watters says:

AMEN!! This is TOTAL Outrage,, STAND UP People!!

    1. Michael H. says:

CBS has no interest in allowing intelligent discourse on its comment sections. They’d rather have hate filled drivel from the likes of IgnoranteElephante and DanTe. Every time a link hits the front page of Drudge the racist masses come running with death threats and bigotry you’d only expect at a Klan rally.

  11. Glen Podhorzer says:

While the lawsuit may have problems from a legal standpoint, every NJ and NY citizen should be outraged at what is tantamount to legal thievery of NJ/NY residents. This is a monopoly, where residents do not have a choice. Why is nobody looking out for the people’s interests? Why do the Governors of both states not speak out for the people and against these hikes? Christie wants to cut taxes, yet this is a massive tax increase. This ecessive toll increase is criminal!. They say they need money for the building of the new Tade Center? didn’t they ever hear of a mortgage? How sick is it that I now have to pay $25 to go from central NJ to Brooklyn to visit my aging mother. When will this end? $25 toll? $50 toll? When will the citizens revolt and just start to drive through the tolls? Yes the lawsuit may have legal challenges, but it should be the spirit of it that move people to act.

    1. Skipper Of NJ says:

To Glen Podhorzer I agree with you 100% I hope the people agree. thank you for your comments. CBS would not post mine.

    2. Cat Watters says:

People Treat you the way we Allow,, Time to say NO MORE!!!

  12. MIKE says:

THERE’S A SOLUTION TO THIS…..STOP USING THE BRIDGES AND TUNNELS!!!!
THIS COUNTRY IS SQUEEZING EVERY BIT OF LIFE OUT OF ITS CITIZENS. UNTIL WE STAND UP AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH…THESE THINGS WILL HAPPEN.

A NEW JERSY MAN FILED SUIT….THE ENTIRE NATION SHOULD FILE SUIT AGAINST THIS!! THIS IS ABSURD, DEMEANING, BULLYING…PEOPLE STAND UP AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

    PROGRESS IS IN NUMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Donald von Fabio says:

the port authority is doing a great work. keep the B&T trash out of my city.

    1. mj says:

you are TRUELY a GREAT humanitarian

    2. Michael H. says:

That “B&T trash” bring millions of dollars to this city every year.

  14. sharon wolff says:

Finally, someone with guts to take on “the big guys” Why not sue. the PA of NY/NJ? Thhink about the minimum wage earner who has to commute to work and pay these tolls, or the elderly who have to go to a doctor. Compound the toll increase with the price of gas you idiots! What about if you are unemployed and have a job interview that requires you to drive somewhere AND pay these tolls. You folks have your heads in the sand! These toll hikes are also going to “line the pockets” of the folks who manage the PA of NY/NJ as well as pay them bonus’. When someone does an investigation and find out there was/is misappropriation of funds I will loudly say I TOLD YOU SO

  15. Sammy Howell says:

lol, its bottom feeding, blood sucking attorneys that take cases like this that bog down the over burdened court system with frivolous garbage.

    anon-surfing.it.tc

  16. Glen Podhorzer says:

Putting aside the legal problems with the case,I applaud him. This toll increase is like legalized theft of the NJ/NY citizens. It is outrageous! And the politicians allow it. Where is due process? Who is there to stop this abuse? They are using the funds for building the new WTC? Didn’t they ever hear of a mortgage loan? People around the country and the world must be laughing at the absurdity of the NYC bridge and tunnel tolls. When will this end? At $25 or $50. Enough is enough.

  17. doc in NJ says:

there are so many problems with this, I don’t know where to begin….

  18. Steve says:

The Port Authority has been increasing tolls regularly for years. The more money you give them, the more creative ways they’ll find to mismanage and spend the money. Its time to stop this monopoly of mismanagement. There is a reasonable price after which the price to drive a vehicle into Manhattan just becomes absurd. $12 is plain excessive. I mean you’re not attending the movies – and this is more expensive than a movie ticket. Think about what your getting for $12.

  19. Surfin Bird says:

why the courts are allowing this?

    1. Ray says:

As an attorney, I can say his lawsuit has merit especially with regard to the use of the funds. The owner and not the city/taxpayers collected billions from insurance proceeds after the towers fell. Why are the taxpayers or in this case toll payers now paying for the construction?
