NYPD Says Overall Subway Crime On The Rise

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) –Many New Yorkers would have a hard time getting around the city without taking the subway.  But now, a spike in subway crime has some thinking twice about getting on board.

This week, there was a robbery and sex assault on the F train in Brooklyn and a suspected female slasher attacking woman riding on the 4 train in the Bronx.

According to the NYPD, overall crime in the subways this year compared to last year is up.  Their statistics say there were 1,503 crimes last year as compared to 1,752 crimes this year — that’s a jump of over 15 percent.

People on the subways get lost in the world of their music or texting or video clips on smartphones, iPads and the rest. For them, a trip on the subway is practically an invite to having a gun or knife pulled on you, and a demand for what you’re carrying.

Because those must-have electronics are expensive, their robbery automatically falls into the grand larceny category. There were 852 grand larcenies last year as compared to 1,075 this year — that’s about a 25 percent jump.

“I take precautions, I always take precautions…look around, see if it’s dangerous to me,” Anjelica Prascacchio told CBS 2’s Pablo Guzman.

Despite those aforementioned numbers,  in almost every other category — like felonious assaults, which includes murder or rape, subway crime is down.

Do you feel safe on the subway? Sound off below!

  • Disgusted Mother

My 13 year old daughter was flashed on the subway this year, and we have caught several men trying to videotape up her skirt and down my shirt in the past few months. I caught a young man masturbating on the R Train a few months ago, I called him out on it and kicked him off the train.

My daughter looks like a kid and dresses modestly – she wears opaque tight AND shorts under her skirts. She spends her mornings and afternoons navigating a subway system teeming with pedophiles, flashers, gropers and peepers. I have seen it myself and experienced it in my youth.

Last month the mayor said the subway system was safer than ever. He is delusional. It might be safer for men, or politicians with their own bodyguards, but for women and girls it is perilous.

These women could be your daughters, your sisters, your mothers. If you see a lowlife pervert doing something sexual to a girl or women, SAY SOMETHING! Seriously, be a man.

Of course subway crime is on the rise… Cops belong on the street, and crime belongs in the subways. That’s why Giuliani pulled so many cops out of the subways during the 1990’s.

So it took more than 10 years for the criminals to notice?

  • RealisticNewyorker

Thug culture is de-evoling and destroying civilized society.

HELL No I don’t feel safe…the underground subways are DANGEROUS and one must be on guard at all times. Ride at your own risk is how it feels….SUCKS!!
