NYPD Says Overall Subway Crime On The Rise
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) –Many New Yorkers would have a hard time getting around the city without taking the subway. But now, a spike in subway crime has some thinking twice about getting on board.
This week, there was a robbery and sex assault on the F train in Brooklyn and a suspected female slasher attacking woman riding on the 4 train in the Bronx.
According to the NYPD, overall crime in the subways this year compared to last year is up. Their statistics say there were 1,503 crimes last year as compared to 1,752 crimes this year — that’s a jump of over 15 percent.

People on the subways get lost in the world of their music or texting or video clips on smartphones, iPads and the rest. For them, a trip on the subway is practically an invite to having a gun or knife pulled on you, and a demand for what you’re carrying.
Because those must-have electronics are expensive, their robbery automatically falls into the grand larceny category. There were 852 grand larcenies last year as compared to 1,075 this year — that’s about a 25 percent jump.
“I take precautions, I always take precautions…look around, see if it’s dangerous to me,” Anjelica Prascacchio told CBS 2’s Pablo Guzman.
Despite those aforementioned numbers, in almost every other category — like felonious assaults, which includes murder or rape, subway crime is down.
