Police: Centereach Man Arrested For Robbing Ice Cream Truck

CENTEREACH, NY (CBSNewYork) — Police in Suffolk County say a man was arrested after he robbed an ice cream truck.

It happened near Hawkins and Nicolls Road in Centereach around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say a Mister Softee driver was stopped at a red light when a man jumped in through the order window with a gun and demanded money.

But that’s when another driver who was stopped at the red light, Michael Rhatigan, jumped out of his car and chased the suspect into the woods with the Mister Softee driver. The two were able to hold the suspect there until cops arrived.

Police found the cash and the gun and charged 42-year-old charged Robert Martone with robbery. He is set to be arraigned on Monday.
