SYOSSET, NY (WCBS 880) - Have you ever heard the calls of “Are we there yet?” from your children while you’re driving on the Long Island Expressway?

WCBS 880′s Sophia Hall On The Story

Well, now you can give them an answer.

New overhead signs are in place to tell drivers how long it will take to get to given points ahead.

There are nineteen of them. The one at exit 40 lists travel times to the Cross Island Parkway and exit 39.

Some drivers, however, are not too thrilled.

“It doesn’t make sense,” said one. “If it says fifteen minutes, it’s not going to take you fifteen minutes. It’s going to take you a half an hour.”

He doesn’t think they’ll be accurate.

The signs will also display messages about particular delays, such as accidents or construction.

Similar message boards are already in place on the Northern State Parkway and Southern State Parkway.

For those of you not from Long Island, the Long Island Expressway has been called the world’s longest parking lot. During rush hour it can take an hour to go a mile under the wrong conditions. These signs are a waste of money.
