Victim's Mom: Family, Friends 'Shell-Shocked' By Yale Tailgate Death
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The mother of a woman who was killed in a tailgating accident at the Yale-Harvard football game over the weekend says family and friends are stunned at the loss.
Paula St. Pierre of Salem, Mass., told the New Haven Register that her daughter, 30-year-old Nancy Barry, came to New Haven to have fun with a longtime friend.
Barry was at Yale Bowl Saturday with her friend, Yale student Sarah Short, when they were both struck by a U-Haul truck that plowed into a crowd at the game.
Barry was pronounced dead at the hospital. Short and another person were injured.
St. Pierre said "everybody's shell-shocked.''
The lawyer for Brendan Ross, the student who drove the rented U-Haul, said the vehicle malfunctioned.
Police said alcohol did not play a role in the incident. Ross passed a sobriety test.
St. Pierre said Barry and Short traveled to Spain and were planning a trip to Iceland after the holidays.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
