Cops: 9-Year-Old Thwarts Burglar In Wanaque, New Jersey

WANAQUE, NJ (CBSNewYork) - Macaulay Culkin could take lessons from this kid.

Police said a 9-year-old girl was home alone when a stranger entered her house Tuesday afternoon.

The girl was home sick from school and her mother had run out to pick something up for her.

The man came in through an unlocked basement door after reportedly spotting the mother drive away.

Police Captain Tom Norton told 1010 WINS the quick-thinking girl locked herself in a bedroom and called her mother who subsequently called 911.

Sean Sisler, 31, of Wanaque was arrested nearby a short time later.

"She gave an excellent description of the man which led us to be able to track him down maybe two blocks away from the home; within five to eight minutes he was apprehended," Norton said.

The girl later identified him as the man who broke in.

Norton recommends all residents lock their doors and windows before leaving their homes to prevent such incidents.

Sisler has been charged with burglary and attempted theft. His bail was set for $5,000. Officials say he was taken to the Passaic County jail in lieu of bail.
