MINEOLA, NY (WCBS 880) – Two men are accused of stealing the credit card information from unsuspecting ATM customers on Long Island.

The ATMs were not in gas stations or fast food restaurants, but at Citibank locations in Nassau County, according to police Detective Mike Bitsko.

Bitsko told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall that two men are under arrest for putting skimming devices on the machines, stealing the personal information from customers’ credit and debit cards.

In the end, the men are accused of stealing over $17,000 dollars.

The detective said there are ways to protect yourself.

“Usually they have more than one machine there. Take a look. If your card doesn’t fit in correctly or if your card seems to have trouble while you’re trying to put it into the machine, look at the other ATMs and see if they look similar in their appearance. If it looks like something’s different, notify the bank manager,” he told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall.

I’ve never understood how someone can go into a bank and hook one of these “skimmers” up without anyone noticing. Do they need tools to do this? Does it involce taking console apart? Do they dress up as maintenance men and hit the bank in the wee hours of the morning and if so shouldn’t there be someone to check surveilance video in the morning to make sure no one was doing this? Seriously how do they do this?

Things like this besmirch our lovely suburbs.

ALL crime belongs in CITIES rather than suburbs. New York City must be held 100% liable for this.

It would make a heck of a lot of sense if the branch manager was responsible for checking the ATMs several times a day looking for these devices…why would anyone suggest it’s the public’s responsibility? It is the banks…period.

And I have proof that the Nassau police is in on this scam. They only bust them when they didn’t pay the protection money. If this ain’t true, the cops can easily sub p o e n a this site for my IP address and sue me.

      1. DanTe says:

        hmmm… CB S blocked the word sub p o e n a.
