Family Of Shannan Gilbert Wants Feds To Take Over Investigation

OAK BEACH, NY (CBSNewYork) — The mother of Shannan Gilbert, the New Jersey prostitute whose remains were found in a marshy area along Oak Beach, is asking federal authorities to take over the investigation into her daughter’s death.

A lawyer for the family says he sent a letter to the Justice Department requesting that the FBI take over the investigation into Gilbert’s death as well the deaths of 10 other victims believed to be murdered by a serial killer.

Attorney John Ray said he believes Suffolk County police have botched the case.

“The Suffolk County Police Department is grossly derelict in its duty,” said Ray. “The commissioner of police is running the investigation like the Pink Panther.”

Gilbert’s remains were positively identified by the Suffolk County medical examiner on Saturday.

Investigators found the remains on Dec. 13 in a marshy area on Oak Beach about a quarter-mile from where her cell phone, purse, jeans, shoes and lip gloss were found the week before.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer has said detectives believe Gilbert drowned when she was last seen running and screaming for help in Oak Beach back in May of 2010.

It was while searching for Gilbert on Dec. 11, 2010 when police found the first set of human remains along Ocean Parkway.

By April of 2011, police had discovered 10 sets of remains on Gilgo Beach, all found about seven miles apart along Ocean Parkway.

Dormer has said he believes a single serial killer is likely responsible for the murders of all 10 victims, but said Gilbert’s disappearance is not connected to the serial killer case.

But friends and family members say they don’t agree and believe Gilbert was murdered.

“I believe Shannan was murdered and that she is part of the serial killer case,” said Gilbert’s mother, Mari Gilbert.

She says she plans to sue if the feds don’t investigate.

A cause of death has not yet been determined.

All I want for Christmas is the decriminalisation of sex work because it’s the gift that keeps on giving – not just to me. I’m not being selfish, even though it would benefit me as a sex worker in the United States, where sex work is criminalised.
For me, decriminalisation would mean I have the same workplace rights as every other worker in America. It would mean I could call on police in an emergency rather than put myself in danger trying to avoid them. It would mean I don’t have to find places to hide my condoms in case they are used against me as evidence. It would mean I could be clear with potential clients about my service and my limitations without fearing they are an undercover police officer.
It would mean my criminal record for receiving money from a client 20 years ago, would be cleared rather than being kept on a criminal public record. For me and thousands of criminalised sex workers in America, it would mean I could prioritise my own health and safety over police evasion, and police coruption and abuse.

It was not determined she drowned, as the autopsy has not determined how she died yet, and she was found with NO PANTS on, after running up to a home screaming “help, help he is trying to kill me”. Even though the home owner reported this in May, they did not follow up that lead till AUG. The cops told this women’s family that THEY DIDN’T TAKE MISSING PEOPLES REPORTS ON HOOKERS.
HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST THAT PROSTITUTE DESERVES TO BE MURDERED. I don’t heard you complaining that we spend 250 million last year to STALK + HARASS ESCORTS, and we still only arrested 80,000 CONSENTING ADULTS. What your comments suggest is that YOU THINK HATE CRIMES AGAINST HOOKERS ARE OK. Your the one who should be ASHAMED of your self not the prostitute.

This is the work of one or two people who knew each other… Its a long stretch of very dark 4 lane road 2 each way.. To find 11 bodies of all women and one man dressed as a women/baby and more then half advertised on Craigslist as sex workers and found so close together on the same strip of road is no coincidence.
