NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The cause of death has been released for hip-hop pioneer Heavy D.

The Los Angeles coroner’s office said the 44-year-old died after a blood clot in his leg traveled to his lungs. The clot most likely developed during a flight from England.

The self-proclaimed “overweight lover,” who was born Dwight Myers and grew up in Mount Vernon, collapsed and died outside his home in Beverly Hills on Nov. 8.

The medical examiner said Heavy D’s weight likely contributed to his death.
