Authorities: Inmate Dies After Fight At Nassau County Jail

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate following a fight at the Nassau County jail on New York’s Long Island.

Authorities told Newsday that the man died before 7 a.m. Saturday after getting into a fight with another inmate.

The jail is run by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Michael Sposato told the newspaper the man was pronounced dead at nearby Nassau University Medical Center.

Sposato says the other inmate involved in the jailhouse quarrel could face charges.

No other details about the two inmates’ identities or the fight were immediately released.

Nassau County Correctional Center can house up to 1,500 inmates.

This death is very disturbing. I am hoping that in the near future we can collaborate to resume a long overdue oversight board which will oversee the Nassau County Correctional Center and be able to make needed recommendations. As a former employee of this jail and as a health care provider, I can say that there is much work to be done, but I am hopeful and I pray for better days ahead. The Nassau County Correctional Center is poorly maintained and the corrections officers are very negligent in the safety or well being of inmates. I know this because I attend the prison to visit someone on a regular basis and I am a witness to the the lack of humanity on the parts of the correction officers or persons in charge. This matter as well as many others should be investigated by a higher authority!
