Could Cardinal Dolan Become Pope?

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — He was just named a cardinal, but could Timothy Dolan one day be named Pope? WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb posed that question to Vatican expert John Allen.

Allen cautioned that “historically there has kind of been a taboo against a superpower Pope, that is electing a Pope from one of the global super powers, and that probably still is in play.”

That tradition lowers the chances of Dolan becoming the first American elected to the Chair of Peter.

“I mean, if you can get past the fact that he is an American, he has virtually everything that people have traditionally looked for in a Pope,” Allen added.

As evidence, Allen cited the time Dolan spent in Rome as a student and as rector of the North American College, as well as the cordial relationship he has with his soon-to-be fellow cardinals.

“He has a lot of direct pastoral experience running complex archdiocese both in Milwaukee and in New York. He can play on a big public state. He has serious credentials with a Ph.D in Church History,” Allen said.

Being an American is still a serious impediment, but he’s pretty much got the package you would expect in a serious papal candidate.

If God wants him to be Pope then he will be Pope.

DEEP! But what about the College of Cardinals, have they no say, no autonomy? Why not just do away with them? Let gØd speak directly, through some messenger, to an ignorant peasant, a “Joe the plumber” type, like he always did in ye olde Biblical times. That would be sooooooooo cool!

Good without gØd and free from religion!

      1. JBD says:

The former Cardinal Archbishop of Philadelphia, John Cardinal Krol was a butcher in Cleveland, OH, from peasant stock before he entered the seminary. Pope John XXIII was from Bergamo, Italy, also of simple means. There’s lots of them. Be careful about God speaking “directly” God speaks to everyone directly, however He also established a Church or way of life which keeps us all on the same page….

        1. Rodin says:

“He also established a Church.” A ‘business.’ Which one?

  3. Colleen says:

I absolutely think that if any American is ever elected to the papacy it will be Dolan. I would not be surprised to see him succeed Benedict XVI. He is quite orthodox and able to communicate and teach effectively. I believe he is being equipped to guide the Church into a new era. I do not understand the hateful comments on this thread. You may not like him, but you are going to have to deal with him. Many crazy liberals who call themselves Catholics could not believe that Ratzinger became pope when it was quite obvious to reasonable, orthodox Catholics. Looks like heterodoxy is not limited to crazy liberals.

        1. Rodin says:

Not everyone is for hire, believe it or not. No, it’s totally my pleasure and free of charge. I consider it a pleasure any time I can debunk religious lies, myth and superstition and deflate hypocritical hogs like Dolan, especially when combined with ambitions of American hegemony and world domination My pleasure and my duty and human obligation. And I have the tools.

Those who, like yourself have no arguments must always resort to insults and put=downs. Pfft! In the end, you show what wet straw you’re made of.

Sorry Rodin, you expressed your opinions, but you did not present a coherent debate nor a coherent argument against religion. Not that I’m interested in your opinion, I’m just pointing out facts.

            1. Rodin says:

I put forth a statement of historical fact to Colleen, not an opinion.

The second was a direct retort to M in M’s hollow sneer.

I need not argue against religion. Its history is perverse and there for all who care to see as is Timothy Dolan’s record through three dioceses.

The onus of proof for their beliefs is on believers. All I need to do is dismiss your absurdities. I have nothing to prove.

Not interested in my opinion? Then why bother entering a thread you obviously can’t follow to offer yours? Interested in mouthing off, perhaps?

In any case, your comment is out of topic and has nothing to do with my responses to third parties.

    2. Mike in Manhattan says:

I guess the insular and linear mentality of the Super Power Americans in politics extends to the Roman Catholic church here in good ole NYC. NO AMERICAN WILL EVER BE POPE! That is a fact Colleen, the next Pope will come out of Africa as it should, there are billions of people to convert across this world and the 8 million in NYC with Dolan is just a village or two over there, (unless Bill Gates and the population control haven’t gotten there first) so no Pope hood for Pompous Do!
As for heterodoxy please look up the meaning, no one on here is arguing with the official stance on anything the church is saying but we are saying that Dolan is arrogant, ill-informed and ignorant regarding his stewardship leading this Archdiocese. Someone says his mother said it was another goal achieved by becoming Cardinal. Ask any Saint if their goal was to be a Cardinal, you know the answer, that is why they are saints. He actually was on vacation when they passed the same-sex marriage, how’s that for heterodoxy? What a slap in the eye for New York catholics, our most visible leader was away on vacation. Where was he when his goal was achieved (oh sorry, his name called for Cardinal) last week? When the press came acalling to film him, Oh yeah, he was home reading the inspiring JFK memoir. REAL POPE MATERIAL, HIM AND HIS FIRESIDE READING. YEAH PHONY AS A $3 DOLLAR BILL ALRIGHT!

      1. Colleen says:

        Dear M in M,
You and that other pathetic attention seeker on this thread hit your capitalization keys by accident. I believe that grammar check will fix this. Blessings to you brother.

      2. Lizzie, London, UK says:

I agree Mike – the other continents will call the shot on the next pope. It’s insane to think they’ll ever elect an American!

  4. Jacqueline says:

When I saw Archbishop Dolan’s smiling face at the congregation at Mass in the church in NYC (Sorry, I cannot remember if it was St. Francis Church or not.) that caters to the gay community, I knew that he was as phony as a three dollar bill. Instead of looking as if he was enjoying the scenery, he should have been admonishing the sinful life style and saving souls. After all isn’t that supposed to be his role? Then, to not do all in his power to prevent the same sex marriage law from being passed in NY, he sat back confident that he was advised correctly that it would not be passed. He made a bad deal! Sorry, folks, but you had better pray that he does not become Pope.

    1. Rodin says:

“…, I knew that he was as phony as a three dollar bill.” But you misunderstand the hypocrisy at hand which is appearing to endorse something the homophobic prelate deplores and openly condemns while condoning and protecting priestly perverts.

In his “defense” (and to point out your blatant ignorance in these matters), he DID try everything “in his power to prevent the same sex marriage law from being passed in NY” and failed. Perhaps you’d prefer Brooklyn’s fascist bigot Nicholas DiMarzio as pope.

  5. Helen O'Hara says:

Any priest whose legacy is writing a book about one of the biggest hypocrites the church or country has known — JFK! Should never have been made a priest in the first place — HOW SHALLOW…Write about the greatness of our Church, the failings, the social blunders or something that is needed, a book we can learn from, which will enlighten people’s lives not another Kennedy book for WHOM is this written? For what reason could you possibly write a book about JFK? Silly, Shallow Irish Man — go find God amongst the poor and needy and save your soul instead of achieving another goal like your Mother stated – “He has reached another of his goal’s – by becoming Cardinal!” The arrogance!!
Maybe he will end up like Cardinal Law – all the signs are there and we all know what happened to him!

    1. Rodin says:

I’m defending neither but you should get your facts straight. At least check before you post. Timothy Dolan did NOT write any JFK biography. He READ one he commented was inspiring.

      1. Jeff says:

Anyone with a brain who thinks a Kennedy biography by Chris Matthews is inspiring is a nut, period! I would be ashamed to have even read the cover let alone the pages penned by the lunatic Matthews – “I have a chill up my leg for Obama or was it tingle? so-called journalist is just the literary works we catholic sheep need to be told to read by our so-called Shepherd…dumb! I have always found him pompous in his homilies and in the media, he made Cardinal b/c that is the next step when you make Archbishop of NY, it was expected. Unfortunately NY has Doughboy for the next 14 years barring ill health so be prepared for more Bidenesque, foot in the mouth comments! Also, someone should tell him to lose a few lbs, it’s grotesque that a “high profile religious” is so obese when most of the world is starving! Please hit the treadmill in between your reading of trashy Roman a clefs of Irish heroes and your own press cuttings!

        1. Rodin says:

Easy, Jeffrey boy. Who’s arguing? I’m just telling what I know and trying to set this poor misguided Helen O’Hara lass who thinks Dolan WROTE the book straight. She’s got both her beliefs and her information screwed up. My mission is to ‘enlighten’.

          I’m going to bed.

    2. Rodin says:

And I thought anti-Catholicism was bad here in the Bible Belt. The Good Ol’ Boys ’round heah ain’t got nothin’ on these d— Yankees. Maybe the hatred of Northerners in these parts is justiified.

Texan and Catholic. Ignorance and bigotry. The perfect marriage. LOL!!!

  7. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx says:

can someone please do something about men who are interested in other mens rectums in NYC.The Mayor the Governor and Cardinal Dolan support this type of behavior .There are law against it that must be enforced by the NYPD.

    1. Rodin says:

      Inform yourself before you drivel.

Sodomy laws in NY are ancient history. Laws against pedophilia, child abuse and rape, however, are still on the books. Perhaps you AND Mr. Dolan might take note.

Learning some proper English grammar might be of help to you as well.

      1. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx says:

so you support men who are interested in yu rectum.I will pray for you

        1. Rodin says:

And what if I do? Those without valid arguments need to resort to insults, their last recourse, to cover their glaring ignorance. I guess this is what passes for Christian values and defense of the faith these days.

The arrogance of piety! Who are you to pray for me? Thanks but I don’t need your incantations. Prayer leads to disprayer. It’s the crutch of the incapable.

You are incapable of even addressing a simple statement of fact, that there are no anti sodomy laws in the books, you are so blinded by your bigotry and hate? You foam and rage.

  8. john says:

Such hatred and ignorance of Catholicism. As Christ promised to always protect and guide His church through His Holy Spirit and to keep it from straying from the truth and teachings handed down to Her.Just because man has turned from God and decided upon himself what is sin and not does not mean the church must follow suit.Gods ways have never changed..only sinful mans.Just because gay extremists and lobbyists can bribe scientists and public officials to change their views on sinful behavior..deemed sinful by God..does not make things acceptable. The church shall never fall..she has been around for over 2000 yrs and weathered every type of attack and remains intact. This bothers the hell out of Her enemies who comment here in the negative as well as the media who wish they could have a say in who will lead the is Gods decision who will lead it and it is the Holy Spirit who wiill guide that person.Try learning about Catholicism before judging..for you shall be judged according to how you judge.

    1. Rodin says:

IF your “Christ promised to always protect and guide His church through His Holy Spirit and to keep it from straying from the truth and teachings handed down to Her,” he either broke that promise about 2000 years ago or is really doing a lousy job.

This is not about “learning” but about ignorance and denial.

  9. gina says:

The people have no say in who is elected pope because..and let’s get this burned into your brains, now…CATHOLICISM IS NOT A DEMOCRACY. Catholicism is a religion. If you’re catholic and you don’t like the pope, leave. If you’re catholic and don’t like the rules, leave. If you’re catholic and don’t like the way the Vatican has handled the “abuse scandal”, leave. Find another religion.

    1. Neil Allen says:

      Well said, GIna.

If you approve of child rape, the Cahtolic church is your church. The US had 4,392 pedophile priests according to thier own report. If you don’t like it, leave. They lied about them, hid them, and fought the victims the entire time. If you don’t like that, leave.

Archbishop Dolan intimidates them, as he did last fall when another pervert priest, Duenas, wouldn’t stop “massaging” a 16 year old girl because she “wore short skirts”. You don’t like that, leave.

Otherwise, stay in the church that minimizes child rape, and bring your kids!

  10. Rodin says:

The perfect successor to a fascist prev perp protector, another fascist perv perp protector. Precisely what his “pastoral experience in Milwaukee” and St Louis prepared him for. Not to mention his “serious credentials” in bigotry, homophobia and sexism.

BTW, Mr. Vatican expert John Allen, since when have the “people” had any say in the election of a “Prince of Cardinals,” that good ol’ boys club?

  11. gerard mccluskey says:

AND….He’s a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians! Up the Irish!

    1. Rodin says:

Not that the Vatican is doing all that well with the Irish these days.
