Teen Rescued After Falling Into East River

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A teen was rescued from the East River Thursday evening after he somehow ended up in the frigid water.

The 18-year-old was apparently sailing a make-shift raft down the river when he fell into the 40 degree water near 87th Street around 6 p.m.

A helicopter as well as FDNY and NYPD boats were dispatched. One firefighter jumped into the water and helped bring the teen closer to a FDNY boat so he could be pulled on board.

The boy wasn't seriously hurt but was taken to the hospital to be checked for hypothermia.

Still no word on why he out on the raft or how he ended up in the river.
