Actor Mark Wahlberg Sorry For ‘Irresponsible’ 9/11 Comment

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Tough-guy actor Mark Wahlberg is apologizing for a comment he made about 9/11 in the February issue of Men’s Journal.

The 40-year-old action movie star said that if he was on one of the planes on Sept. 11, 2001, he would’ve fought off the hijackers and prevented the plane from ever hitting the Twin Towers.

“If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry,’” he said.

Wahlberg claims history may have been different had he decided not to fly to Toronto a week before the attacks, avoiding boarding the Los Angeles-bound flight out of Boston which crashed into the World Trade Center.

“To suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible,” Wahlberg told TMZ following harsh criticism for the comment. “To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with.”

“I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention,” he added.

In 2006, the star of the new movie “Contraband” made similar statements saying, “We certainly would have tried to do something to fight. I’ve had probably over 50 dreams about it.”

A widow of one of the passengers who fought back on Flight 93 told TMZ that Wahlberg’s comments were not only disrespectful but silly.

  2. Scott says:

I think he is 100% on target. If passengers in the other planes (other than flight 93 ) showed more intestinal fortitude, the outcome would have been different.
There should be more people like him.

  3. TROLL ALERT says:

    wahlberg’s at the mic, again!

  4. D Wahlberg says:

I remember when Mark and I were kids. He loved to dip his popsicle stick in some dog mess then walk around with that same stick in his mouth. Business end first.

  5. Cece says:

This little guy should really shut his mouth. The events of that day did not take place on a movie set. No one yelled cut. Not one person on those planes believed that they would crash. Was’t a script, jerk. It was real life. And don’t make silly little comments from your silly little mouth.

  6. jeff says:

Someone should advise Mark: “That sometimes it’s better to keep your mouth shut and be thought the fool then to open it and remove all doubt.”

  7. FDNY_Yellow says:

Hey Pole-Sitter, Thank you for doing your job… And thanks to some your fellow fireMEN who left their OWN wives and kids to shack up with 9-11 widows and their ‘Insurance Money’ after the tragic events that took place in our city…What were those guys called again? Oh yeah, “Mentors” NY is overwhelmed with Pride & Appreciation.. Never heard of any scandals like that from the other agencies? (Great choice in screennames too, Pole-Sitter)

    1. scott says:

You must be an upset ex-wife of a fireman who wasn’t getting along with her husband and is throwing dirt on others. Perhaps you should get a life and move on.

  8. Wotta doosh says:

    Typical short-guy remarky-mark.

  9. michaelfury says:

And the FDR and CVR would no doubt have recorded your heroic efforts for posterity, Mr. Wahlberg.

  10. Graham says:

I am clearly the only one on this site that doesn’t think he said anything wrong. He has the right to say what he wants and should not have to apologize for it. Others can say what they want and no one blinks an eye. He says something unpopular and what most have thought and people flip out. Who cares whether they knew if the plane was going to hit towers or not, they did nothing to stop a hijacking from continuing. How many of you against how many? Box cutters? really? that is going to keep you seated? unpopular and rarely stated, but true. deal with it. Go to other less liberal sites and you will see others feel the same as me.

    1. Nid says:

Sounds to me like he is just as tormented by this nightmarish scenario like most of us. 911, like most murders never should happen. It is an unconceivable crime that deserves ultimate punishment. Mark’s actions were iresponsible, but I’m glad he had the maturity to fully rethink what he had done.

Keep it funky Marky-Mark. Love your work

  11. Bullett says:

This is the real world Mark, not the “silver screen” where you can play the tough guy. Glad to hear you retracted your comments.

  12. michaelfury says:

Had you and all of Seal Team 6 been on those planes, it would have made no difference, Mr. Wahlberg.

  13. Thomas says:

Hind Sight is 20/20. I would bet that if the people on those planes KNEW they were going to crash into the World Trade Center Towers … they probably would have done something different. I’d like to hope so anyways. The PA flight did. But it was a very short time span and they probably thought it was a “normal” hijacking … not a suicide mission. It had to be shear terror and panic from start to end. … NEVER FORGET!!

    1. no_apology_necessary says:

No apology necessary, Mr. W; you’re entitled to your opinion. And truth WAS the first casualty. For 90 yrs the industrialized states have instigated war against sovereigns in order to monopolize oil and entrench oligarchic, and now fascistic power. 911 was about blowback.
But RIP to the victims, and condolences to their families, friends and pets.

      1. michaelfury says:

Yes, “truth was the first casualty”, but “blowback” does not explain any of this:

  14. Abner says:

He sounds like a six year old

  15. Hahahah says:

He sounds like a typical arrogant fdny member. Those losers are always walking around telling tall talls about how they can put a fire out by just breathing on it. Sign up mark they need you..lmao

  16. lazy eddie says:

The men on the plane had to believe they were going to land, 1970’s type style hostage hijacking, knife to the pilots neck already, it they had any idea I am sure they would have acted Knowing what we know now, they couldn’t pull it off, they would hit the ground first. Don’t paint the victims in a bad light, they have family, children, sons, etc. What you said shows a lack of maturity. By the way, whitey bulger was about a foot taller than marky mark and much much more tougher looking, whitey could still kick his rear at 80 years old, mark would not make a good whitey.

  17. karen s says:

sorry is falling on empty ears. this is the same guy who wants to have a jailhouse interview with whitey bulger, who was behind the mob murders of 19 people in the greater boston area with the idea in mind of making a movie. get the cash register noise and macho level waaaaaaaaaaaaay down dude. your mea culpa is not enough in the confessional. for your real penance, you must go out and QUIETLY perform community service – no cameras, no spin doctors, public relations peeps. oh yes, and then drop some cash in the accounts of several charities without claiming deductions. then, think before opening your mouth again.

    1. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx says:

Mark said what any real man would say to protect his family. Its called love of family and now he has to kiss azz because the only real men in Hollywood are in hiding or dead..
Liberalism is a mental disorder and you have it Karen.

      1. Pole sitter says:

Real men wear the FDNY uniform. We are the true heros all the rest of you should thank us every day!!!!

        1. John G Head says:

Wow…get over yourself already. There are many more “heroes” in the world other than the post-9/11 myth building of the NYPD and FDNY.
I come from a family of “public servants” and we never considered ourselves “heroes”. Just guys doing our jobs. Good jobs at that.
There’s more to being a “hero” than a job buddy, and I knew a lot of FDNY and NYPD who were not “heroes” outside of the stations, if you know what I mean.

  18. pooh pooh says:

He’s just getting into the headlines to plug his new crappy movie.

  19. Joe Rock says:

this disrespectful idiot is soooo lucky to be where he is as a star in many good movies…but like so many other stars just like him he really needs to plug the piehole for personal opinions in interviews………..not proving anything because the D-bag was NOT on that plane!

  20. didn't have to advertise says:

…that you’re an a**hole. most of us knew it. now we all know it.

  21. ProFromDover says:

    Shame, Mary Mark!

    1. ProFromDover says:

      Mark Mark, that is! 🙂

  22. lieutenantdan says:

I believe that this gentleman suffers from a personality disorder of some kind and to me he appears to be a narcissist who believes that his genitals are much larger than they really are.
This all could be a well planned stunt for a movie promotion thought up by
sociopathic film executives to place a C actor into the media spotlight with the intentions to promote a film for financial gain.

  23. KOKOLOKO says:

He thinks its movie-set or something? It is the only time/way he can play his fantacies as a tough guy. What a jerk. What an insult to those that perished on 9/11.

  24. 1 S. H. M. U. K. O. says:

When you look up Clusterfuc in the dictionary, you will see this jerk’s picture

  25. 1 S. H. M U. K. O. says:

Most definately an accident waiting to happen, what an IDIOT

    1. punkass says:

This nagga is a chalk line watin’ ta happen.

we practice on this dude in my hood

  26. Monstur says:

Maybe the men would not have chosen that plane then this would not have happened ..

  27. DRLJR says:

Consider how many more people would have died if the people on Flight 93 had not decided to fight back. And then consider how these Islamics got control of the airplanes. If others had tried to take back their planes instead of 3000 plus people dying and billions of property destruction it may have only been the planes and a couple of hundred people.

Socialism, look around and think before your attack me, has trained people to expect others via Government instructions to deal with problems instead of taking care of things directly. That is why the crime rate are so bad, taxes are so high and our freedoms are disappearing. Think about it.

    1. GiantfaninMD says:

What does any political leaning have to do with how an individual would act in that situation. Stop watching Fox News and come back to the real world.

      1. DRLJR says:

If you had actually thought about the comment you would have understood the comment. Everyone wants someone else to do something instead of doing it themselves. Flight 93 had heroes on it – they did something and who knows how many people’s lives they saved – I don’t – but it was a lot.

  28. Staten Island White Guy says:

Marky Mark has gotten his Calvins wrapped way too tightly around his head.

    1. amazed says:

Who is this dorky little actor and why might we believe he would have been better prepared than any of the other passengers to single-handedly take back the plane from the terrorists? How would he have known at the time what was intended. The heroic passengers of the last plane knew what was intended because they had cell phones and were told what had already transpired in NY and DC. That knowledge was a huge part of why they acted they way they did. That’s why it’s hugely herioic. This actor-wannabe is an IDIOT.

    2. john says:

Ewu! I think, like many people not in the situation, it’s easy for Mark and many of us to dream of what we think we’d do. It’s quite another thing to be in the situation. I’m sure he didn’t mean to be disrespectful in his posturing.

  29. Kim says:

Before he said these things I wonder if Marky Mark thought about how negativity publicity worked out for Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen?

  30. EARTH says:

This 40-year-old actor needs to get a grip and stop the ego. The fact of the matter is, he wasn’t .

I believe those who were on those planes did the best they could do and may their souls rest in peace.
