Smoky Fire In The Bronx Kills 1

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One man is dead and a woman is in critical condition after a smoky fire in an apartment building in the Edenwald section of the Bronx on Sunday morning.

According to neighbors the victims were the building's landlord and his daughter.

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the floor to fight the smoky basement fire, said Battalion Chief George Campbell.

"The fire was under the garage which has a concrete floor, that holds everything in, the heat, the smoke, so we had to cut a hole to get all of the smoke out, it was very smoky," he said.

Neighbors told 1010WINS reporter Glenn Schuck that firefighters responded very quickly.
