NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A New Hyde Park eatery is stepping in to help the New York Giants with a major dilemma: finding a good slice of pizza in Indianapolis.

A volunteer police escort was on hand to clear the way for General Manager Gaetano Corteo, of Umberto’s Pizzeria on Jericho Turnpike, to catch his flight Friday morning at LaGuardia Airport.

Nassau Sheriff Michael Sposato said he is a big Giants fan and donated his car to drive the pizzas. Retired police officers drove their motorcycles and Sposato says no taxpayer dollars were wasted.

1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera reports

Umberto’s is delivering 15 pies — including Grandma, Buffalo, and Margherita — to the team and there may be a little something extra in the slices for good luck.

“We do have a special ingredient but we can’t publicize it, otherwise all the other teams are going to want it,” owner Carlo Corteo told 1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera.

The special delivery is expected to arrive in Indy just in time for lunch.

Umberto’s has been delivering pizza to the Giants for the past four seasons.

Players Justin Tuck and David Diehl are big fans of the Grandma pie.

First Off….Ozone Park Pizza on Liberty Ave in Queens is king. IMHO.

Secondly, I lived 18 months in Mass and had to go to about 40 pizza places because one seemed to be worse then the other. And the ones that were ok, were not consistent on the second visit.

Also, most of these places don’t sell by the slice. Would have to order a whole damn pie. And if you they did sell slices…they called it a “wedge”.

Ugh. Thank God I came home.

NEW JERSEY PIZZA AND BAGELS STINK…WHY, ITS ALL IN THE WATER…. NYC WATER IS WHAT MAKES PIZZA, BAGELS, ITALIAN BREAD ETC…

    • Technically and literally

NJ doesn’t have polluted water? Guess you have never been to Perth Amboy, Bayonne, Linden, or coincidentally EAST RUTHERFORD.

With that said, GO GIANTS of NJ.

  • Technically and literally

The Giants play in New JERSEY. Aren’t there any pizzerias located there? Also, the last I checked, NJ is closer to Indy than NY. Which means that pizza made in NJ would arrive warmer and fresher for those New JERSEY Giants. Just saying.

    • let me guess?

      you’re from Hoboken, right?

      • Technically and literally

No, lived in NYC all my life (lucky me not). Don’t really have a fav NFL team, but always root for the Giants and Jets since they are both from the nyc AREA.

Sorry to insult anyone (not that any should be), but hearing “-New —-” (see, kills me to type it out like say it) Giants from where they DON’T play is like nails on he chalkboard.

  • dollars and SENSE

In the last 50 years, what percentage of NY City and State tax revenue (income, sales, real estate, etc) has been outlaid for NYC public assistance and food stamp programs on an annual basis? In that same time frame, what percentage of NYC residents have received such benefits (also on a year-to-year basis)? And is it all possible that funds for such programs could ever be exhausted (at least for a few months) one day?

  • Bill

Yeah – I’m sure it takes such an incredible talent to make pizza that nobody could step up in Indy to deliver. Eat em now boys – N.E, is going to kick the Giants a’s so hard it is likely you’re going to lose your appetite watching this game.
