Sen. Menendez Calls For Federal Investigation Into NYPD’s Muslim Spying

House Homeland Security Chair King Says Commish Kelly 'Should Get A Medal'

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) –– Is it religious profiling or good police work?

An intense debate is underway in our area amid new revelations that NYPD spying on Muslim communities included neighborhoods in Nassau and Suffolk counties and Newark, N.J.

And as CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer reports, the feds may soon get involved.

They are mosques and businesses, even a beauty salon, all over Newark and Long Island and they were all spied on by the NYPD in the wake of 9/11.

One of the places under surveillance was a Valley Stream halal meat market. Undercover officers said that they found a collection box for a local mosque.

However, the butcher there said has no problem with the NYPD spying.

“NYPD is like … a good,” Wassim Naqva said. “No, I’m happy about it.”

But a woman at a Valley Stream mosque that was also on the watch list had a different take.

“I think that it’s a violation of our rights. It’s our right to practice religion freely,” she said.

The NYPD is on the hot seat over its surveillance practices in the Muslim community. U.S. Senator Robert Menendez is demanding a Justice Department investigation of what went on in Newark.

“I’m deeply concerned about reports that the NYPD focused on individuals in my state who were not suspected of any criminal activity,” Sen. Menendez said.

Sources told CBS 2’s Kramer that the Newark Police Department — the chief was then Garry McCarthy — was briefed both before and after, and that a Newark police liaison officer accompanied NYPD personnel.

Mayor Cory Booker brushed that aside on Thursday.

“They reached out as a courtesy to Garry McCarthy and asked for some basic information from our department,” Booker said.

However, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said on Thursday that Newark police were fully aware of the operation.

“In this particular case, [the NYPD] did notify Newark officials, before and after…a Newark liaison officer was assigned to the NYPD personnel when they were in there,” Browne told reporters.

House Homeland Security Chairman Peter King defended the NYPD’s actions as vital to the anti-terrorism fight.

“Ray Kelly and the NYPD should get a medal for what they’re doing. This is good police work. If you’re going after radical Muslims you don’t go to Ben’s kosher deli,” Rep. King said.

Spokesmen for New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly said they were not available Thursday and will address the issue Friday.

Muslim groups are considering filing suit, charging that their civil rights were violated.

The FBI and DEA fabricate evidence, steal from suspects and use murder to close bad cases.

There is evidence that several corrupt DoJ, DoD and CIA employees had taken bribes from Al Quida in exchange for information and logistics support during the four years prior to 9/11.

When one considers that the 9/11 terrorists could take jumbo jet flying lessons, move about the US unobstructed, live for several weeks less than 2 miles from NSA head quarters and be on State Department watch lists, even without the supporting evidence of bribery this makes sense.
If FBI and DEA employees where less concerned with enriching themselves by stealing from suspects and taking bribes and more concerened with doing their jobs, 911 may never have happened.

i thing the real problem is that the MEDIA is making a bigger deal than it is! this is what the media is talking about everyday and making the muslim community go up in arms! the NYPD hasen’t arrested anyone. The media is also not mentioning that many suspected terrorists were part of these “peaceful” moslem student groups! so the public is being misled by important facts!

“If you’re going after radical Muslims you don’t go to Ben’s kosher deli”

So true. Comedy gold, Mr. King.

When other groups start waging similar jihads against our country and the city, then we’ll focus on them. Until them, keep up the good work.

  • Richard

His actions are all the more reason that he be defeated in the next election.

  • Steven

Thank You NYPD for trying to keep us safe here in NJ. lord knows nobody here gives a damn.

I believe these foreigners should considerate it a privilege not a right to practice their religion in the United States as they can not do in their own country. If they have such a problem with our laws, customs, etc. they should go back to their own countries. EVERYBODY gets checked up on not just them and I am sick of hearing them whine about their rights. We as Americans have the utmost RIGHT to be safe and secure in OUR HOMELAND.

  • Illegals must go!

Menendez should also call for an investigation into all the illegal immigrants of hispanic descent who proliferate in his Senatorial District. Or is that too close to home for him?

    • Menendez and New Jersey deserve each other.

The man is almost an illegal immigrant himself. His parents are hard working people who emigrated from Cuba and he was born in the US making him a citizen. He is the epitomy of those who are lucky to be in this country but hate it for what it is.

    • Michael H.

There’s no such thing as a “Senatorial District”. The two Senators from NJ represent the entire state.

      • What?

Doesn’t that make the state his district?

  • M.A.D

I am really getting tired of the muslim community, get over it already. Since they are complaining they must have something to hide.

People forget that right after 9/11, an Imam of a Mosque right on Atlantic Avenue was arrested for funneling money through his Mosque to Al Quaeda. An Imam.. The owner of an Optimo around the corner from my home was arrested and shut down for a similar operation. All races and ethnicities have evil mixed in.. Muslims are no exception. I never took the governments crucade to fight the Mafia as an insult to the Italian Community. You know why? It is the ONLY way to fight fire with fire.Plus, I”M NOT IN THE MAFIA so there’s nothing to hide. When you fight a group that hides within society, you WILL step on some toes.. Unfortunately!!

  • Bullett

Hey Bob, let’s cut through the smoke and haze. We all know why you want to know what the NYPD did, and who approved it. In my opinion I think the FBI, CIA, and even Homeland Security approved their actions and kept you out of the loop due to your love of any vote will count. Your trying to swing mooslime votes while your popularity is slipping like the Titanic did into the depths of the deep. Let’s face it, your time is up, please exit from the back door.

If you are any indication of the level of education in the USA, I would highly recommend an Englisg proficiency test for citizenship. You lose… BIG TIME!!! Ya Doofus!!!

Englisg? Take your own advice about schooling, DOOFUS!!

                  • dakotahgeo

My mother had much more sense than to run around with male prostitutes. If your mother knew you were the byproduct of her union, she would have had an abortion to save herself the embarrassment and the world the possibility of a welfare case. And?

ANNNNNNNNND… it isn’t JUST your country, Old Poop!!!

How quickly we forget the internment of innocent Japanese Americans during World War 2. They lost their homes and businesses for the simple fact that their ancestors came from a country we are at war with.

Even more important, how quickly we forget the loss of our Constitutional rights!

“From a civil liberties perspective, this surveillance program is a mess. Newark residents were targeted, eavesdropped, photographed, mapped by police with no allegation of wrongdoing — profiled, it seems to me, by religion or heritage,”

Menendes is pathetic. He should ‘profile’ who constuites a vert large majoroty of who those who have been arrested and convicted over the past 10 years for real or attempted acts of terorism. Guesswhat, Bob – it wasn’t members of the Catholic League. It wans’t Southern Baptists. It wansn’t members of the the PTA, the NRA, Planned Parenthood, Kiwanis or Rotary. Most were – you guessed it – younger, male Muslims.

    • Goober

The same thing is done to Americans everyday, so why didnt he speak up before and why only in defense of the muslims?

  • PETE

Menendez is not an American in my book. So, what do you expect from a guy like him? The NYPD is doing an excellent job and it is a shame that a guy who is selling out this country to the highest bidder raises his voice. In another society, like in a Muslim society, with his qualifications, he would not have become a Senator, but would most likely clean up the floor of a mosque!! Do we really have to listen to this crap, instead of chasing him out of the country he abuses!

    • dakotahgeo

Thank God people like you are generally ignored!!!

  • Richard

Menendez is a disgrace. He is worried about Muslim rights? How about saying something about the Portugal government releasing the convicted murderer of a NJ resident. Menendez has not said one word. What a failure he has been!

  • Goober

Where was this guy when Obama extended the Patriot act and signed the NDAA bill into law this year? Why is he only willing to step forward and speak out in defense of muslims?

  • Bob

The NYPD should be given a medal for investigating the mosques. Islam is not a religion. It’s a political ideology, masking as a religion, which is attempting to destroy Western civilization.

  • dakotahgeo

It’s about damn time the NYPD was called on the carpet and investigated! These out-of-control law enforcement officers have got to be reigned in and made to pay the price. Did the FBI or CIA sanction these acts? If so, they need their tail feathers trimmed also!

    • USMC

People like you make our great country weaker, PERIOD!!

      • dakotahgeo

Thank you… thank you! Coming froma USMC I take that as a badge of honor. Now, go peel some more spuds!

    • Bob

If you, or one of your relatives, were killed or maimed because of Islamic terrorists, you would be screaming because the NYPD didn’t do enough to stop them.

      • William

Absolutely…… there’s 2 schools of thought, broken down into 2 groups:
        1. You were DIRECTLY impacted by 9/11 2. You WERE NOT DIRECTLY impacted by 9/11…. IT’S THAT SIMPLE!!!… Everyone has rights, but our Law Enforcement Agencies(FBI,CIA and yes NYPD) sometimes have to do things like this to keep us safe.

      • dakotahgeo

Errrrrrr… my relatives are all dead and I moved to South America. I’m enjoying the 5-ring circus you pathetic excuses for entertainment are providing. Enjoy Obama’s and the Democrat’s overwhelming victories this November election! Tschau Tschau!
