'Wichcraft Sandwich Chain To Sell Coffee, Snacks At New York Public Library

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Visitors to the New York Public Library have long been able to satisfy their thirst for knowledge.

Now they can satisfy their actual thirst and hunger with coffee, sandwiches and other snacks.

The library is teaming up with the 'wichcraft sandwich chain, bringing two mobile carts to the library's landmark Stephen A. Schwarzman building on Fifth Avenue starting Thursday.

Library officials say they decided to sell food after a 2010 survey of library users showed refreshments were a priority for many. In particular, researchers who spend hours in the library wanted to eat without leaving the building.

"Our patrons and visitors have expressed a great desire to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee in the inspiring atmosphere of the Library," said Anne L. Coriston, Vice President for Public Service at NYPL.

The food and drinks will be permitted only in the area around the carts on the first and second floors.
