Parents Upset By 'Simple, Nude Prints' At Gallery Near Manhattan School

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Some New York City parents are upset over a Manhattan art gallery featuring photos of naked women right across the street from their children's elementary school.

The controversial exhibit at Dino Eli Gallery includes some full frontal nudity and is in full view of PS 42 on the Lower East Side.

Dino Eli, the owner of the gallery, contends the works are not obscene.

"Well the school is directly across the street, but we're not dealing with pornography here or anything obscene. We're simply dealing with a woman's breasts and every woman has them," he told 1010 WINS.

The moms and dads of students at PS 42 say they don't want their sons and daughters to be distracted by the exhibit. Eli says that he has made some compromises with the principal of the school.

"The gates will be closed during the morning hours and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. -- which most of the kids are out," he said.

Dino Eli Gallery is the same gallery that featured "Porno Paintings," an exhibit of sexually explicit works, last year. That exhibit also prompted community uproar and complaints from concerned parents.

Eli said that in this case, opponents are complaining about "some very simple, nude prints."

"I complied with the community by taking them down, but I had a big response from another side of the community that claimed censorship so they're back up," he said.

Should the works be taken down from the gallery?  Share your thoughts in the comments section...
