Paramedics Save Newborn In Crown Heights
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A trio of paramedics rescued a newborn baby in Brooklyn on Thursday.
Police said the baby's mother, Shoshannah Muhammad, inexplicably handed the child off to a stranger. The stranger flagged down a police officer, and EMS arrived shortly thereafter. Muhammad was later arrested and is facing felony charges.
Just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, a woman called 911 from Bedford Avenue in Crown Heights.
Caller: "This baby is going to die out here in the street. She has a white pillow case on her head. The baby is in a thin blanket. This baby's umbilical cord is at least over a foot long. This thing was not born in no damn hospital."
Operator: "OK, we have the ambulance and the police responding."
FDNY Paramedic Carl Gandolfo said the baby had lost her pulse and already turned blue by the time they arrived.
"I have a 15-month-old. It definitely hits home, especially when it's a pediatric call. The baby is blue and you want to do all you can like it's your own," he told CBS 2's Chris Wragge.
"I immediately opened the airway, gave two rescue breaths and the baby began to cry. That's when my partner arrived with the ambulance," Gandolfo added.
"When the baby left our care, she was pink and she was crying. It was good and it was an honor," added paramedic Jamaal Shabazz.
"It feels great. I mean everything just feels great on the job. That's what we train for. That's what we live for," said paramedic Terence Lau.
