NEW ROCHELLE, NY (CBSNewYork) – New Rochelle is set to vote on whether or not to allow residents to own chickens and build chicken coops on their properties.

City Council is considering a code change that would allow residents to keep as many as six chickens on their property.

The movement to allow chickens in New Rochelle was started by sisters 15-year-old Emma and 12-year-old Sophia Piester, who asked permission to own three hens for the purpose of egg consumption.

While some are opposed to the idea, chicken owners in communities that already allow the birds say they don’t see what the fuss is about.

“Half the time you won’t even know a person has a chicken because the coops are gorgeous, they fit into the decor, the chickens are quiet and at the end of the day you have the best thing on your plate which is eggs,” said Sue Guzman, a managing editor of several daily Westchester websites who owns chickens herself.

She says they’re clean, they don’t smell and she hasn’t had to buy compost for years.

New Rochelle will be discussing the code change at a meeting Tuesday night.

Ossining village officials are also discussing the same issue.
