Parade Of Trains, Other Events To Mark Grand Central Terminal's 100th Year In 2013
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Grand Central Terminal is on track to celebrate a historic milestone next year.
The majestic transit hub opened at the stroke of midnight on Feb. 1, 1913 and MTA Executive Director Joe Lhota announced on Tuesday that some grand plans are in the works for its 100th birthday.
"I have always thought Grand Central Terminal is the heart of New York and this centennial celebration will show all of New York just how grand this building really is," Lhota said.

The yearlong celebration will include a parade of historic trains from all over the country next May and an exhibition of the terminal's history.
A makeover is also on tap. The terminal's 42nd Street entrance will be fully restored.

"You come into a foyer that was not restored when the rest of the terminal was restored," Lhota said. "Well, we are going to get to it now, and it's going to be done. I think it's going to be very impressive."
Former Metro-North Railroad President and MTA Chairman Peter Stangl will be raising money for the centennial along with Caroline Kennedy, whose mother, the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, saved the terminal from demolition.
