Police: Teen Charged In Far Rockaway Playground Vandalism

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police say a 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the vandalism of a Queens playground last week.

Allan Swafford has been charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, criminal mischief and burglary. Police say he was at the controls of a stolen excavator that was used to wreck a brand new playground in Far Rockaway.

Police say the March 20 vandalism spree caused more than $100,000 in damage. Investigators say Swafford plowed the excavator through the fence and then smashed the big toys.

No security guard was on duty at the time of the incident.

The new play space was just weeks away from opening to neighborhood children.

Community board district manager Jonathan Gaska said the damage has pushed back the grand opening of the playground at least a couple of months.

Destroying a child’s playground built to improve a community is just one step above standing on a corner and tripping crippled people. Jail alone is too good for this punk. He should be made to rebuild the playground no matter how long it takes so he can feel the damage he did though his own sweat, blood and tears.

FARROCKAWAYS FINEST MY ASS!!! those corrupt cops just want to pin it on some 1 and get a medal and a better pay check, And all you people judging him before you get the facts are just as bad. He has been harrassed by these same cops for months now and the “crime stoppers tip” happens to be from the same detective that has it out for him! this kid is innocent and btw those 3 prior arrests he wasnt found guilty for! the cops fail to mention that because they want the world to see view him as a monster… smh vandals are the LEAST thing farrockaway needs to worry about

I think it will be a while before he receives his state driver’s license. In the meantime, he should apply for a construction job specializing in demolition. He appears to be good at it.

Hey Allen Swafford, get that but ready for a little Bubba Play.

Good job for Mr. and Mrs. Swafford. They must be so proud of their offspring….so proud they can visit you in JAIL.

Hey punk! Who’s laughing now? Get your kicks at the expense of a community, and especially kids. Shame on you. Can’t wait for your arraignment. You better not be able to make bail. Your family should mortgage the house to pay for your damage and idiocy. We’re not done with you yet though. Sweat equity in the neighborhood of thousands of hours and no pay for you should be part of your sentencing – after jail. This is your 3rd arrest after all. “He’s a good kid with problems” just ain’t gonna fly. Justice for the community!

GREAT POLICE WORK! I hope they make an example of him so other teens don’t think it’s cool to destroy something that is not your’s.
